I don’t really use Twitter anymore, I have a burner that I just use for sports and weather and news and never post from. But every time I open it, I have to question my sanity.
I just read an article about how there is an ice cream that is designed to, and I am not making this up, “taste like your grandma”
I subsequently read another article about how the New York Knicks won an NBA playoff game because someone let out “an epic fart”
These are real things. You can look them up.
Are people just getting more insane? Should I double up on my meds?
Newer and still busted : completely #Decentralized social media that is completely unfiltered
Newer and also busted to some degree : decentralized social media with poorly filtered and discriminatory public blocklists
New Thotness : a legitimate focus on prioritizing manageable #moderation tools for instance operators instead of the current "here's a moderation hammer so treat everything like a basic ass nail" tools most generally in place
This paper is really important, presenting empirical evidence of the imbrication bet. AI & the surveillance biz model. This is notable particularly given that most production surveillance tech is proprietary, its existence and use hidden from the public.
@Mer__edith Well, it is up to us, by boycotting businesses that produce, research, use, employ, support, sell or buy that tech as well as consequently only accepting tech and solutions that make it hard if not nearly-impossible to do these kinds of #MassSurveillance...
And unlike #Discord it's not a #centralized shit they host with #VC money on #aws, #GCP or whatever but instead you can #SelfHost and even write your own client because it has an actual #API...
Really proud of Signal, of this piece, and so happy to help lead an organization willing to be honest about what others hide: the incredible cost of developing consumer tech, and why it’s so hard (but rewarding!) to build tech that doesn’t rely on monetizing surveillance.
Where I speak some advantages Signal has over the bigger richer rest of tech:
“We don’t have to be full of shit. We’re not a surveillance company. I’m not trying to pretend Facebook is good. I don’t have to toe a party line that is divorced from reality”
Hell yeah #SignalApp@signalapp :party_parrot: :party_parrot:
Signal users will now be able to edit messages (very similar to how the edit feature works on @Mastodon ) 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Proton Mail now offers "Proton Pass" -- Don't trust them.
As soon as it becomes popular, they'll limit the service, and make it part of their paid plan.
They like to get people hooked on their services, then raise their prices.
I was an early adaptor of Proton Family, before they surprised everyone by discontinuing the service, then starting it back up nearly a year later at a most costly premium. -- They did that to their paying customers. Don't trust them.
@protonmail Why is the source code for mail app not pubicly available? I want to use Protonmail app from #FDroid without any anti-features in the code but since it's not available I don't currently use any Proton services. @fdroidorg
Hey there - would you be so kind and check out my feature request for Signal Desktop "Allow multiple accounts to be linked to one Desktop installation (/linked device)", especially if you feel the same? :blobfoxpleading:
Ofc you don't have to, but the thread stalled a bit lately... :blobcathearthug:
Slacks redesign is a complete disaster. I'm not sure who they think this is for, but it's not me or anyone I know. What real world problem were they trying to solve? So many basic UI screw ups I wonder if they tested this at all.
"But Bitcoin is a great way to monetize excess renewables"
No, this was never true. If you make a capital investment in a mining rig, then you want that rig making you money 24hrs, not just when the rest of the grid is not consuming renewables.
For several reasons (don’t @ me) I still have accounts on those other sites (winding down) and it’s continuously baffling to me that people I consider politically and academically smart continue to complain about #enshittification (of the #birxsite, of Google, of Chrome) but can’t be arsed to use the alternatives that are already in place. What is this phenomenon? Even those fleeing the #birdsite go to #bluesky - and talk about how it will very probably go down the same route. But #Mastodon is „unusable“, say the super communist critics of #tech on the central website of the very industry they complain about
@rheinze
People #complain about the fact they have to get used to new #tech that people might have never done anything with. It takes time to move to a new #platform, especially if it's #federated some people prefer the #control a site has with the #centralized system as it has a basis of who controls it. #Mastodon doesn't and that causes people to loose direction of focus on the bigger picture and become afraid about it. Or using a new tool that only #geeks use. That is why #meta made #threads
My feelings so far on the pros and cons of Bluesky vs Mastodon.
Disadvantages of Bluesky:
– posts can't be viewed by those who don't yet have an account
– posts are limited to 300 characters
– no Direct / Private Messages
– no post editing
– max bio length is very short
– no way to see your own history of likes
– no bookmarks
– no way to mute specific words or phrases
– no videos
– no way to Content Warn text, only images
Disadvantages of Mastodon:
– umm… cross-instance interactions with people you don't already follow can be a bit clunky, I guess?
We're in the final stages of the Online Safety Bill and, honestly, I'm not optimistic. This is just the next attempt, and probably the successful one, at breaking end-to-end #encryption in the #UK. I admire the stances of @signalapp and the like, but the ones who are going to be most negatively affected by this are those who aren't as technically proficient. And that's the problem. Truly #privacy-preserving technologies should be accessible to everyone. #tech#surveillance
I just don't have any evidence yet that they're an #ANØM-Style #Honeypot but I'd declare every LEA "criminally incompetent" if they didn't already #EncroChat themselves inside and put every phone # of every user on a watchlist.
Or does anyone think the CIA & NSA didn't find a successor operation to #MINERVA?
