@cas
We were just wondering. You do know that 2020 was a time of increased concentration of wealth, right?
400 billion to the top 1 percent, or something akin to that.
You have seen the money supply chart, and the quadrupling of it (in Australia, sixtupled). It is not "deranged" to talk about this stuff in the context of technology, given the types of discussions at the time, including quotes from US congresspersons. Heck Trump wanted forced sale of a tech company to Oracle. Stay well.
@gabriel
Yeah np. We temporarily put aside what we know, that #allPhonesAreBad, because we saw a room at #FOSDEM24 dedicated to FOSS phones and we thought there might be a chance that phones are going to be okay to use again.
We spent a night re-learning what we already knew about phones — all bad.
Alas, #Aliendalvik is #closedSource. Sometimes you need to waste time like this even if just to suspend ones belief for a moment and entertain new ideas.
Where I speak some advantages Signal has over the bigger richer rest of tech:
“We don’t have to be full of shit. We’re not a surveillance company. I’m not trying to pretend Facebook is good. I don’t have to toe a party line that is divorced from reality”
@macberg You know, I don't like so much the idea that everything I paste into a service like DeepL is used to train #commercial and #closedsource#software (wish it was #opensource). On the other hand, it has become quite good, and although I rarely use all the suggestions, it helps me to improve my English (I think). 🙃️
Doesn't feel great starting to work on your 2 year #Unity project today with the recent policy changes they've made. Not really keen on using Unity again after this project is finished but thinking about the knowledge I've gained about their proprietary software suite it'll be such a waste!
I think I've learned my lesson. Learning to use #proprietary#closedsource systems is a total waste of time as in any moment the owner of the system could flip a switch and everything you learned is invalid.
@leiphf I really like Resolve and am actually quite happy with it's features. However, I am on a quest to replace many, if not all, #closedsource apps with #opensource#alternatives. 🙂 In case of Resolve I was originally thinking of Olive.
@fsf Where can I read about the legal licensing and copyleft issues surrounding generative AI algorithms like LLMs (Large Language Models) like Chat-GPT or Copilot, trained on GPL'd source code?
I wonder if there is a need for a new license that explicitly makes training generative AI on open source code requires the AI model to be open sourced?
Does the FSF have any written opinions or educational materials related to this topic of the relationship between copyleft and generative AI trained on copyleft source code?
I don't think that copyleft actually has any power over proprietary software. I don't see a legal end to users having a choice for proprietary software.
Currently, I see the copyright system as the only necessary legal core of copyleft. I'm open to learning other legal defenses of copyleft that don't depend on copyright at the core.
Is there another way to stop copyleft software from being used to create closed source software?
I imagine legal battles should currently be happening in this space, but I haven't heard of much, which is why I ask.
