fucking knew since day one that there was something off about the entire matrix-chat thing, from the list of sponsors to weird vibes from the founders and leaders of the project.
their software is about the only thing that’s worse than their politics. still appalled that people like #Mozilla moved their entire communities into the hands of such awful people.
This is the worst thread I've honestly seen in a lot of time. The person behind Element's Mastodon account wasn't even rude, at all.
Meanwhile people in the thread are telling them to f### off just because they are providing encrypted communications to governments and aren't afraid to make it clear.
"Yes, we fund #Matrix dev by selling encrypted messaging to governments, which includes police: if you don’t like that then please feel free to use a different app."

@Decentralize I don't understand the problem.
Would we prefer that governments and law enforcement fund proprietary development that nobody else can benefit from?
This shouldn't necessarily even be news, because the moment element (or even mastodon!) launched managed hosting, this became a real possibility. #Matrix
What will be the tangible difference between the BGS that #Bluesky is making for AT protocol and a really well-connected relay operated with #ActivityPub?
@atomicpoet Is it me, or does #ATProtocol appear unnecessarily complex‽ At least for the foundational aspect of what #BlueSky is trying to do‽ #ActivityPub might not be advanced, but it’s simple enough for the average non-tech person to understand (even if they do not understand the “how” of the #Fediverse).
While there’s absolute radio silence from @element about the topic now (not surprising, they’re simply being very corporate, as usual), there’s been a reaction by the @matrix account, and instead of being like “don’t worry, we won’t let corporate or governmental interests influence Matrix in a negative way”, they’re just being sassy about it.
@hywan I don't know why they're banning this client. #Matrix is not a vendor-lock-in service, banning #Element would not stop users accessing it. This is different from WhatsApp or others.
The fact that you see very little presence of the larger cryptocurrency community on the Fediverse shows the actual interest in distributed systems compared to their interest in making money. A large part of the cryptocurrency community are just VCs or wannabe VCs.
a lot of crypto people don't really carea bout the values, they just want money, like you said
there's like a half dozen blockchains based social media networks fighting for a very small pie at any given time (bluesky, farcaster, lens) and because network effects are what they are, none are winning against big bird
the really hardcore decentralists (like the #monero crowd) vault right past Mastodon to maximally decentralized and encryptable services like #irc and #Matrix
an existing culture in the broader fediverse that's deeply hostile to crypto
Taken altogether, it makes it seem improbable that we'll see crypto communities congregate in the Fediverse
#PlasmaMobile news for April: 3 new #apps, PowerPlant, MarkNote, and OptiImage land in Plasma Mobile; Tokodon invites you to explore #Mastodon; NeoChat helps you organize events through #Matrix with #location sharing; and much, much more.
People say that having a #DefaultInstance#makes#onboarding easier, but when I first tried #Matrix, I joined their default instance, and the cesspool that was the default instance made me not want to use matrix for months after.
Seems the same thing is happening with .social... Maybe just have a simple wizard to assign people their first instance instead.
I know this will lead to a heated debate, but I have to agree with @Gargron.
Having to pick an instance/server is cited as the biggest hurdle to joining Mastodon, and dismissing people who feel this way is just plain rude.
Yes, the registration flow for Mastodon should be user-friendly. And yes, we need to live up to the promises of decentralized social media. We just need to get creative about our approach.
@stefan@Gargron I've worked on #decentralized systems for many years now, including #XMPP clients, #Matrix, #Tor, and @fdroidorg and I think the new #Mastodon client onboarding experience is a good idea. But it also means there is a new slippery slope towards centralization, and it needs to be heeded and monitored to make sure it doesn't do more harm than good. The good news is that there are multiple, good clients, so that helps quite a bit.
