Now that the envelope control board (middle) is working properly and talking to the Nucleo (left), I'm gonna try to send some MIDI to the Raspberry Pi that runs the synth engine, and control the synth with its own hardware for the first time. #electronics#synth#prototyping
Retro-computing / retro-gaming enthusiasts, in the last few sections of https://linksta.cc/@seven you can find a range of links related to Commodore 64, Amiga, arcade game and chiptune nostalgia.
Question for you computer based music producers and virtual instrument collectors out there. If your have a couple of free beastly synths like Surge XT and Vital in your collection, what are the benefits of adding more, and seemingly simpler ones, to your collection?
My own plebish instinct is to download them all to expand my arsenal, but I'm starting to wonder what the benefit is over learning to actually fully master something like Surge. #musicproduction#synth
I received a soldering station and some chips yesterday, so I soldered a PCB for the synthesiser. It's mostly my friend and collaborator on the project who is funding this. #electronics#synth
I got a new keytar as a gift yesterday. It's a MIDI controller only. I want to play this thing in band, but don't know what to connect it to. What's your favorite softsynth for playing live? Name presets, if you use them. Mostly classic rock. I prefer poly -- I can't keep myself from playing chords, even in lead lines. MacOS or maybe iPad.
@synths Answering my own question a little: MainStage FTW.
If you don't know MainStage, you should. MainStage is a reskinning of Logic oriented toward performance. It strips out all the recording and track editing functionality and adds a simplified interface that just gives you live performance controls. Underneath, it's got all of Logic's instruments, FX, routing, etc., through the mixer strip interface.
@synths MainStage has an example "concert" for synths, which is meh, but it also has a concert called Alchemy, and all 25 of the patches there are entirely usable. They include the 80s Sync Lead that @robleaves suggested. (Thanks, Rob.)
Now I need to figure out how to tie the sampler in so I can use some acoustic piano and bass guitar samples.
After combing through datasheets and Google and comparing photos to figure out the pinouts of parts and connectors we can't test yet, the keybed controller for the synthesiser now looks like this, and it's gonna be hooked up to this 61-key keybed from Fatar. #synth#electronics
I should be promoting my new album but I got distracted recreating #synth sounds for songs I might want to cover live. I'm guessing many of you will recognize this one right off the bat. It's not perfect but I think I got pretty darned close!
I'm using a sample from a Novation Nova which is a 1999 synth so I'm assuming that patch was in turn a recreation of the original. Which I think was an OBX, but don't quote me on that.
If I had to choose a favorite arcade game soundtrack from the 1980s, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. It would be "Magical Sound Shower" from Sega's classic 1986 Out Run driving game.
Composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi using FM synth tech, it's such an uplifting tune. I love it, and it brings back childhood memories of spending more cash than I should have in order to race around in a Ferrari with a blonde bombshell sitting next to me. 😎
@ooRay_creation When it comes to computer music in general, my top picks would be:
● Monty on the Run, Commodore 64 (Rob Hubbard)
● Magical Sound Shower, Out Run, arcade
● Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, arcade and C64 / Amiga (arranged by Tim Follin).
● Rambo intro / title screen, C64 (Martin Galway).
● Streets of Rage, Megadrive.
● This #Amiga tune by our own game music composer Ramon Braumuller:
When I was a youngster in the late 1980s, I formed an Amiga game dev team with 2 friends.
Before making games, we started by trying to sell game music that used minimal RAM, made with our music editor SIDmon.
To promote our game music, this energetic music module was composed by our musician Ramon Braumuller. The file, including tiny sampled sounds, is only 22 kilobytes.
