Repeating yesterday’s route aiming for making a PR on 10K, and this happened… 💩

(so my 10K PR remains to be 50:51)

1/ In this age of LLMs and generative AI, do we still need knowledge graphs (KGs) as a way to collect and organize domain and world knowledge, or should we just switch to language models and rely on their abilities to absorb knowledge from massive training datasets?

When performing reasoning or generating code, do really understand what they’re doing, or do they just memorize? Several new results seem to have painted a not-so-rosy picture.

The authors in [1] are interested in testing LLMs on “semantic” vs. “symbolic” reasoning: the former involves reasoning with language-like input, and the latter is reasoning with abstract symbols.

If a powerful is told that “Daphne Barrington is the director of A Journey Through Time”, it would surely be able to answer the question “Who is the director of A Journey Through Time?”, right? Well, according to a recent paper [1], not quite (screenshot).

Solving causal tasks is a hallmark of intelligence. One recent study [1] categorizes these tasks into covariance-based and logic-based reasoning (screenshot) and examines how models perform on causal discovery, actual causality, and causal judgments.

This explains why sometimes someone favorited/reposted my post, when I clicked on their profiles, I didn’t get to see their posts. The end result is, I don’t feel informed enough to follow them, which I think discourages Mastodon users from expanding their circles.

My dear / friends: I need to ask for advise on picking for runs on paved roads and mildly unpaved trails (photo 1):

  1. ASICS Trabuco Max 2 (photo 2): the middle in weight (~290g), not waterproof. Bouncy w/ rocker design.
  2. Salomon Speedcross 5 (photo 3): the heaviest (~295g), waterproof(?). Big lugs.
  3. Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTX (photo 4): the lightest (~270g), waterproof. Smallest lugs.

Do you have experience w/ any of these? What would you pick?

ArXiv.org has been a wonderful place for researchers to submit findings and catch up with the latest, but does submitting papers there (“early ArXiving”) increase the odds for them to be accepted later in a peer-reviewed venue?

(Drumroll please)

1/ Alright -- here is my not-so-good, pretty-bad weekend's 16.3-mile report:

  • On Saturday I finished my 35th 5K 25:20, almost 2 minutes slower than my PB (23:21) just a week ago! I even stopped to walk 3 times during the run, which never happened before!

  • On Sunday I finished my 11th half 2:10:58, almost 20 minutes slower than my fastest (1:51:48) just a month ago!

Done with today's #Seattle Half #Marathon! Woke up at 5am, left home at 6am, arrived at Seattle Center at 6:30am, started the run at 7:30am, and finished in 1:56:21 (pace 8'53")!

I was 936 of 3112 overall, and 42 of 189 in my age group!

Earned my #HalfMarathon PR today on the beautiful #SammamishRiverTrail (SRT): time 1:48:25 pace 8'16”/mile according to #Strava. My watch again generously claims time was 1:42:49. I picked Strava to be the record.

Temp feels like 50F, dew point 47F, cloudy w/ breeze 3.2mph SW. In other words, perfect weather to get PR!

Today I ran my 2nd practice run this month with my son riding his bike with me! Weather was cool with a bit of drizzle at the end, temperature was 55F (12.8C) w/ dew point at 53F.

Distance was 26.27 miles, moving time was 4:11:50, and pace was 9’35”/mile. This is 22+ minutes faster than a couple weeks ago!

9.37 miles easy run @ , also testing another pair of : ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25. Result is not good: the lateral side of my right foot hurts after the run (not during)! I blame it on the high stack of cushioning: my theory is my natural reflex to counterbalance the unevenness of the trail surface is interfered/distorted by the cushioning. Does that sound plausible?

Got my PR in my dusk run in the park: time 1:17:51 pace 8’21”/mile! Getting ready for the early March in !

Although there’s still a lot of room for improvement, I’m proud that I can actually speed up my pace now into the run! And this was done after a heavy meeting day at work started at 8am!

Bonus: I got a heart award on this special day!

5th time is the charm: I finally cracked my 1st sub-4h today! Moving time was 3:50:33, pace 8’48”/mile. For each half I was actually faster than my best official PR (1:55:16 < 1:56)!

Weather was typical : nagging drizzle. Temperature feels like 40F (4.4C) w/ wind 7 mph (S). Thanks to my son on the bike (he came even when losing 1 hour sleep to change), we performed no-stopping fueling twice, and I only brought two gel packs on me w/o phone.

My first , done! Official result was 3:51:39.8, pace 8'50"/mile. I was ranked overall 50/167, in males 40/102, or in my age group 5/9. This is slightly slower than my PR in practice (3:50:33, pace 8'48”).

But the official time didn't account for the three times I was lost (!) and had to either retract or asked people (I was not the only one). According to my watch I earned PR on marathon: 3:44:58, pace 8’35”, and : 1:45:19, pace 8’02”. (1/2)

Perhaps a bunny helped me today 🐇? After last Sunday's race PR, on my 50th 5K today I made my third PR this year: time was 22:33, pace 7’16”! This is 34 seconds faster than my last PR!

This completes my 2nd goal in 2024: earn 3 PRs in Parkrun!

One of the stretch goals in 2024 is now accomplished! I got my latest PR in today's 5K: 21:38 at pace 6'57"/mile, thus reaching my goal of getting sub-7' pace!

Going in I was pessimistic because of the jet lag. Turns out running uphills with 1300ft elevation gains in paid off!

Next up: finish 5K in under 21 minutes!
