“Is the Barkley the world's toughest race? In a word, yes. But that's reductive and misses the point. It's fundamentally a celebration of the magnificence of the raw human spirit. To find that inner spirit of ours, we need a challenge that’s almost impossible.”

“What chemicals cause that nostalgic old book smell?

Compounds like benzaldehyde, vanillin, ethylbenzene, and 2-ethyl hexanol are often responsible for old book scents. Benzaldehyde has an almond-like scent, vanillin smells like vanilla, ethylbenzene is sweet and plastic-y, and 2-ethyl hexanol is lightly floral.”

When performing reasoning or generating code, do really understand what they’re doing, or do they just memorize? Several new results seem to have painted a not-so-rosy picture.

The authors in [1] are interested in testing LLMs on “semantic” vs. “symbolic” reasoning: the former involves reasoning with language-like input, and the latter is reasoning with abstract symbols.

Our paper on automatic knowledge-graph-aligned dataset construction is out! The main points [1]:

  1. We showed cyclic evaluation — the process of training GTG (graph-to-text-to-graph) or TGT using a graph-aligned dataset (screenshot 1) — reflects faithfully the same trend a unidirectional evaluation does (screenshot 2-3). It is therefore a better way to assess data quality because it does not rely on knowing ground truth matches!

“… a 2018 review noted the relationship between and energy intake being J-shaped: is dysregulated at low levels of physical activity, creating a mismatch between the energy expended and the amount of food consumed, leading to weight gain. On the other hand, as physical activity increases, so too does satiety signalling, which reduces the amount of food consumed.”

I have listened to many fascinating interviews on @thegradient . This recent dialog between Professor Peter Tse and Daniel Bashir on from the perspective of is especially intriguing!

Some rough notes I can remember of:

  • Danger of using metaphors in science: neurons as toilets
  • "Deadly weapons" in the fights of seeking truths:
  • Mathematical logic: mathematical contradiction
  • Science: falsification

Got my PR in my dusk run in the park: time 1:17:51 pace 8’21”/mile! Getting ready for the early March in !

Although there’s still a lot of room for improvement, I’m proud that I can actually speed up my pace now into the run! And this was done after a heavy meeting day at work started at 8am!

Bonus: I got a heart award on this special day!

My dear #running / #trailrunning friends: I need to ask for advise on picking #shoes for #marathon runs on paved roads and mildly unpaved trails (photo 1):

  1. ASICS Trabuco Max 2 (photo 2): the middle in weight (~290g), not waterproof. Bouncy w/ rocker design.
  2. Salomon Speedcross 5 (photo 3): the heaviest (~295g), waterproof(?). Big lugs.
  3. Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTX (photo 4): the lightest (~270g), waterproof. Smallest lugs.

Do you have experience w/ any of these? What would you pick?

Today I ran my 2nd practice run this month with my son riding his bike with me! Weather was cool with a bit of drizzle at the end, temperature was 55F (12.8C) w/ dew point at 53F.

Distance was 26.27 miles, moving time was 4:11:50, and pace was 9’35”/mile. This is 22+ minutes faster than a couple weeks ago!

9.37 miles easy run @ , also testing another pair of : ASICS Gel-Nimbus 25. Result is not good: the lateral side of my right foot hurts after the run (not during)! I blame it on the high stack of cushioning: my theory is my natural reflex to counterbalance the unevenness of the trail surface is interfered/distorted by the cushioning. Does that sound plausible?

@BreakingImpossible 1/

I’ve done it: my first-ever ! Temperature was 22F/-5.6C in lovely , time was 4:34:01 (excluding time for picture taking), and pace was 10'26".

This was my 4th attempt to extend my range beyond half Marathon (13.1 miles), starting from 16 miles, then 20, 23, and finally today's 26.24.
