This mess has written all over it. Since this news article was published, we’ve learned that elected representatives of Wilmot Township and Waterloo Region have signed NDAs, and thus cannot even explain their actions to the farmers whose land they’re planning on expropriating. The entire situation is appalling.

Your comment about nuclear physicists and cat ladies made me laugh. When I arrived on these shores, it seemed like Mastodon was filled with geeks and artists…and quite often geeks who’re also artists. The longer I’ve been here the more open this environment feels though.

I came here to say this too. I don’t think people (pundits, press, voters) understand how fascistic Poilievre’s behavior is — already. He hasn’t been elected. He has no power currently except to continue to control the narrative he thinks will get him elected. Whatever he’s doing now will be exponentially worse once he wields the power he seeks. He’s a demagogue, and he has no intention of ever serving anyone’s needs except his own.

I’ve been watching him build a cult following, and I’ve also heard our press speak about him as if he’s a garden variety Canadian politician. None of this is remotely normal politics — yet something, maybe normalcy bias, keeps people from seeing the danger he represents. Sometimes I worry we’re going to have to endure a fascistic government in order for the “I’m voting for change, he’s gonna make Canada great again” peeps to understand why fascism is bad. Geez Louise! 🤨

Stephen Punwasi has been aggressively (and IMO arrogantly) pessimistic about the Canadian economy for many years. We aren’t even close to following the economic trajectory of Greece. We’ve avoided a recession, our credit rating has remained high, and by most metrics, we are still among the world’s successful economies. Our current challenges are shared by many countries globally: housing, food insecurity, social inequality, climate change, etc.

He was always a Bond Villain. This tweet was after he left office, but effectively sums up who he is. (Harper’s lap dog, Pierre Poilievre, is currently the leader of the Conservatives. Poilievre is every bit as dangerous, possibly worse — yet is still being underestimated by our media, pundits, and Cdn electorate. I’m very worried about the threat Poilievre poses to vulnerable people if he’s elected PM.)

The SOTU was painful to watch. Such a combination of lies and right wing, pro-war, even racist framing mixed in with a handful of progressive promises he will never keep. Meanwhile, despite his mission accomplished claims, Covid will continue to kill and disable due to Biden dismantling public health precautions, and the genocide will continue in Gaza. Genocide Joe has got to go.

You’d rather have Trump? I understand being upset over US foreign policy when it comes to the US relationship (and considerable blind spot) with Israel, but I don’t understand why anyone would decide he needs to go at any cost. Speaking as your northern neighbour, the first Trump administration was incredibly destructive to the US — and rest of the world. A second Trump administration is unthinkable.

Every time I vote, no matter which election, I think about how many women had to fight for my right to do so. IMO it’s a sacred duty to our community. I’m worried about where the world is headed right now, and I’m not always in love with the choices we have to make, but I’m damn well going to vote.

A new Canadian federal party called the "Canadian Future Party" is getting ready to launch.
The interim leader is Dominic Cardy, a former member of Premier Higgs N.B. conservative gov't. Big players include Andrew Coyne, Lisa Raitt, General Hillier, and a collection of Stephen Harper conservative team members.
They are branding themselves as a "voice for pragmatic, centrist Canadians."
Slim media coverage so far, tho.

With the CPC scooping up most of the nutbars from the PPC by adopting their anti-everything strategy (while also trying to sell themselves as centrist 🤷🏼‍♀️) they now have a mathematical advantage in the next election.

Creating a slightly more moderate wing isn’t likely enough to quash the momentum of the nuts, but will split the conservative vote. I dunno, maybe they think there are more progressive cons/con-libs than I do, but this doesn’t seem like a winning strategy. 🤔

Maybe…but can you imagine PP agreeing to a coalition government with a bunch of people who split from CPC? It might be advisable, but he’s shown himself to be incapable of playing well with others, so I can’t imagine him doing that. I can’t imagine him cooperating with anyone, honestly.
