Why do so many trans women go into tech?

I think we heard that's where all the trans-sisters are.

SCOTUS just struck down Biden's student loan forgiveness. Student loan payments will resume this fall.

In case you're unaware, there are lots of income-driven repayment plans. If you have student loans, you should look into them (Pay As You Earn, Revised Pay As You Earn, Income-Based Repayment, Income-Contingent Repayment).

While Biden's blanket forgiveness was struck down, student loans can be forgiven after 20-25 years of payments (or 10 years of public service work). Income driven repayment plans can lower your student loan payments to 10% of discretionary income. It's not perfect, but they can help a lot of people.

Billionaires are giving closed social networks a new hat!

Before people argue that is open, it's not open until there are many different servers that aren't controlled by Bluesky.

Before people argue that is open, it's not open until they implement ActivityPub (and in a fair way rather than embrace, extend, extinguish)

We've yet to see if they will actually be open.

, , , , , and others in the are actually open today.

Massachusetts is launching a new tourism campaign emphasizing queer folks. I think our state has a lot to offer beyond tourism: a place for queer people and others to thrive with strong rights protections, great jobs, and wonderful people and communities.

One of the things that makes me sad is knowing every day some LGBT person decides they can't move to Massachusetts because housing is too expensive. They decide that they can't afford the rights, protections, and environment to thrive that Massachusetts offers.

I care so deeply about housing affordability because it's a crucial building block that lets people thrive. We need to make Massachusetts AFFORDABLE for us all!

I think it's interesting that Apple's approach to AR is trying to make it a computer experience, not a metaverse experience. You're not seeing fake people in a fake room. You're seeing a normal teleconferencing interaction that has been elevated because you can turn your head and see different pieces of it and because you can show a large format of your presentation as if you had many screens that could hover anywhere in the room and spatial audio gives you better sound awareness.

The experience they're selling isn't "check out this new universe we've created." It's "look at what we can do when we can put displays anywhere and let you interact with computing in a new way." It's "what if you could be on an airplane with a 70 inch TV?"

The Center for AI Safety and OpenAI founder Sam Altman say that "Mitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority."

I'm more worried about Natural Intelligence. I'm afraid that Natural Intelligence might lead to a global catastrophe due to built-in dopamine reinforcement cycles pushing it to optimize for local minima around short-term rewards. This could lead to Natural Intelligence using environmental resources in an unsustainable manner bringing about climate change and destroying life on earth.

Or maybe I'm just a conspiracy nut and we should listen to the billionaires.

Possibly unrelated, here's some photos of New York City circa 2023.

Also, press that like button so I can get some short-term dopamine rewards!

"She's everything. He's Just Ken."

Barbie = { Everything }

Ken ∈ Everything

∴ Barbie is Ken

Given that Barbie is everything and that Ken is a member of the set Everything, we therefore know that Barbie is Ken.

"And you shall teach them to your children, discuss them at home and on the road, bind them to your person, and inscribe them on your home" [Deuteronomy 6:7-9 paraphrased]

Today in the United States, it's Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates when enslaved Black people in Texas were told they were free.

When right-wing people get angry about Juneteenth, critical race theory, LGBTQ+ awareness, etc., it's because what we teach our children is so important; what we discuss has power; being visible is meaningful. It isn't the end, but we are trying to teach our children better than the generations before us, talk about righteousness more openly, and be create a better world.

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the Emancipation Proclamation's message finally getting through against those who tried to stop truth and righteousness from being heard.

We will teach righteousness to our children, talk about it at home and in our schools, bind it on our person, and inscribe it on our homes and businesses.

I'm sad that will be charging so much for API access that apps like won't be possible (https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/).

It's really sad since is so amazing - maybe my favorite app for its UX.

I understand it from Reddit's profit perspective. Facebook's average revenue per user is ~$23/mo in the US/Canada. Snap is making ~$2.75/mo in North Am, Central Am, and the Caribbean. Pinterest is making $2/mo in US/Can.

Christian Selig (author of Apollo) notes Reddit is looking for ~$2.50/mo/user for API calls. It seems like Reddit wants the ARPU it thinks it should be getting (despite Reddit's ARPU being rumored to be the lowest of the social apps). With Apollo being an iOS-only app, its user base is often what advertisers often pay more for.

I agree with people that there's a strong possibility this could backfire and it's sad to see another platform go this way. I guess that's what makes feel special - no one person or company can pull the rug out from under us.
