This Hunt's bumblebee landed on my shirt and stayed there long enough to worry me. I set it down in a raised bed, with a bunch of freshly picked dandelions, next to a tiny ceramic water cup. It woke up and started browsing on the flowers. I didn't see it go, but it did go.
"Traditionally, the bees were kept abreast of not only deaths but all important family matters including births, marriages, and long absence due to journeys. If the bees were not told, all sorts of calamities were thought to happen. This peculiar custom is known as “telling the bees”." #WorldBeeDay
I was heading to pick up my son from school, and there was a bee struggling upside-down on the hot pavement. I managed to flip her right-side up with a stick, but she couldn't take off and flipped over again.
As I was crouched in the parking lot, feet in a skirt came up to me, attached to a young woman who asked if I was trying to save a bumblebee. Then she put her fingertip down to the bee, who grabbed it, then she flipped the bee aloft and she flew away! The woman disappeared too
I wasn't planning to post today. But since I learned that today is #NationalRescueDogDay and #WorldBeeDay, as well as #Mondog, here are some assorted pictures from our home. This #gardenia is a different variety with thinner petals but smells just as good.
The Exsultet or Easter Proclamation is sung at the Easter Vigil. It may be the only liturgical mention of bees, describing candles as “the work of bees & of human hands”. #WorldBeeDay

#WorldBeeDay 🐝 From pesticide detox to increased longevity, the benefits of the sweet stuff go well beyond simply nourishing the hardworking insects in the hive.
This is a solitary bee just starting its life. It visits these last Phacelia blooms over & over. Eventually, the bee will move over to other flower varieties that are coming on strong.
Diversity in plants & habitats makes the difference on this small scale. Native bees forage over hundreds of yards-not miles like honey bees.
Our little striped friends are essential pollinators of flowering plant species and food crops 🌼 Without them, life would be a lot less colourful and a wide range of food would no longer be available to us.
Sadly, bees are increasingly under threat due to human impact, so it is also up to us to promote awareness and help them any way we can. Find out more about the importance and bees and what we can do to support them here: https://www.un.org/en/observances/bee-day
I was planning on posting this today anyways, but now I find out it's #WorldBeeDay? I'm hoping that's a good sign 😅
I've been teaching myself how to use #Krita & dipping my toe into the world of #DigitalPainting.
Don't worry, I don't plan on ever stopping my usual pen & ink art, but there are some things I want to create that I need to stretch into other mediums for.
Anyways, I did a “learn krita while painting Bob Ross” tutorial which was super helpful, ...
May 20 is World Bee Day. There are ~ 20,000 different bee species in the world. Here in Ontario we have at least 400 native bees (none of which are the honeybees, which are from Europe). Bees are key to pollination. According to the UN nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops. Further, worldwide ~35% of invertebrate #pollinators, especially bees & face extinction.
Yesterday I did move a frame almost full of capped brood, honey, pollen, and bees into the 'empty' hive.
This morning there were guard bees doing their thing and really checking over any bee that showed up, there was robbing yesterday from the feeder dripping and running out the entrance but nothing serious. I reduced the entrance to make guarding easier and noticed some pollen coming in which was surprising.
Before starting today's #inkyDays drawing, I saw some posts about World Bee Day. So, I decided to draw some dancing bees, even though I drew some a few days ago.
