Dolores is an utterly charming and beautiful soul and I feel very lucky that I got to spend so much time in her company for this article – the first ever about her in the English language, I believe!
Six people injured in Russian strikes on Kherson, Kharkiv regions over past day. One confirmed dead in yesterday's double ballistic missile attack on Mykolaiv
It wasn't an "election" in Russia; stop using that word.
It was an orchestrated propaganda exercise designed to convince Russians, and the rest of us, to ignore the catastrophe Putin has inflicted on his nation. 300,000+ Russian men are dead and wounded for no reason at all.
@NatureMC@anneapplebaum speaking as a journalist, when there is limited space, resources, a limited number of people with years of regional expertise (like myself), those resources are better spent continuing to highlight the suffering of Ukrainians at Russia's hands, war crimes, kidnapping, attacks.
Trafalgar Square, London. Marking two years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Massive turnout (in the thousands by my estimates) – an all-day event
Two years ago, when I said I was Ukrainian, people cheered for my nation. Today, they go silent and look at me as if I’m terminally ill. I can see that they’re sorry for me. They don’t know what to say.
“Ten years ago they attempted to kill Ukrainians in their own country, in their own capital, simply for their peaceful choice to be themselves and to be free” – Zelensky
@randahl why does it shock you? I've been encouraging people to recognise this for ages and I don't understand why there's even the remotest chance of pushback on this. There should have been a blanket consensus that this is a genocide for months. Top Russian figures have explicitly stated intent and it fulfils every single criteria (except maybe birth prevention, but arguably rape fulfils that – though intent there needs to be examined more closely)
@randahl I'm not trying to attack you, I suppose I'm more shocked at how few people are actually acknowledging this – sometimes it feels like I'm screaming into the void
A good take on the Vyacheslav Morozov case – the Russian academic arrested in Estonia. It makes one wonder, how many other Russian academics in western institutions hide an agenda under the guise of being a "Putin critic". Innocent until proven guilty of course, but KAPO (Estonia's domestic intelligence service) does not act rashly.
On forthcoming film Athletes of War and the IOC decision to let complicit Russian athletes compete in Paris this year.
“Our conditions are different from those of the Russian athletes. We have missiles flying over our heads,” says wrestler and Olympic medalist Iryna Koliadenko. “We may not wake up.”
The timing of Putin's supposed non-public announcement of interest in a ceasefire is more consistent with Russia's ongoing efforts to delay and obstruct further Western military assistance to Ukraine than with any serious interest in ending the war, the report's authors said.
Seems like another case of western media inadvertently relaying Russian propaganda as a result of taking what Russian political figures or "former officials" say or intentionally suggest at face value.
Anyway, NYT article is BS, arming Ukraine is the only answer to Russian aggression, and anyone who argues otherwise is either a delusional idiot or intentional saboteur.
