The people who are pushing these laws are Dominionist Evangelicals who are, Right Now, LITERALLY talking about destroying Democracy and replacing it with Theocracy (which, honestly, will really just be Autocracy spiced up with CEO Jesus).

@ninjacooter I've been trying to tell people since the 2016 election that this is the plan. It was literally in the RNC platform to replace Constitutional law with Biblical law right behind overturn Roe and reverse Obergfell. The party is still using that playbook despite the claim of "just doing what Trump wants". I think it was Tennessee that just quietly passed a marriage law that they hope will get to the Supreme Court, and now they are openly talking about destroying democracy at CPAC.

@_L1vY_ The one remaining major newspaper in Baltimore was just bought by a right wing mogul who owns the Sinclaire stations that have been forced to push his ideology, and he wants the paper to be more like the local Fox affiliate he owns. So we’re basically screwed here because the journalists are sure to quit or be fired as the union has already expressed its concerns.

    SCOTUS already granted Jack Smith's petition to expedite the consideration of a writ of certiorari before judgment.

    This was lightning fast.

    Any hope Trump had that his immunity claim would slow things down is now dashed.

    Also, Trump knows how to read tea leaves: SCOTUS immediately giving Jack Smith what he wants is not a good sign for Trump.

    I think for fun I'll go see what Trump has to say about all of this.

    @Teri_Kanefield @Joe_Hill It's one of those slippery slope things because if he gets it, then it applies to Biden and whoever comes next and you know Republicans don't like it when Democrats get equal treatment. So as much as they'd love for him to be immune, they just can't because how would they then be able to go after the so-called "Biden Crime Family" if their biggest target is completely immune?

    This is apparently an internal Automattic memo making the rounds on Tumblr, indicating that they’ve failed to get Tumblr activity/revenue up since its 2019 acquisition and it will now be maintained by a skeleton crew of Trust & Safety and support folks, with the majority of its 139 employees moving to other projects inside Automattic.

    @andybaio When I posted a Murphy Brown episode recap (of the reboot series) one photo had Murphy covered head to toe in a robe and slippers. Her ankles were bare, Tumblr flagged it as offensive (as well as images of Survivor contestants on the beach) and that’s when I left, as I believe many others did. The lesson - when you buy a company, don’t try to remake it (ahem, Elon).

    Every election means every election at every level! Every matters! In the past few weeks:

    The GOP proposed a bill to allow schools to deny students free lunches based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

    Our military has been weakened by a Republican blocking military promotions because he opposes Pentagon abortion policy.

    North Carolina is a 50/50 state, but the GOP just passed a gerrymandered electoral map that flips 4 of the state's 14 seats into Republican control. (1/3)

    Someone asked me what I think is going on with Trump's lawyers attacking the clerk.

    Yesterday I said this:

    "It's hard to tell what is going on with that. My best guess is that Trump's lawyers are fatigued, know they are losing, and are getting weird and paranoid."

    Judge Engoron, who sees it all up close, said there is misogyny.

    I just saw a picture of the clerk and I have revised my opinion.

    The judge may be right . . .

    I don't know how to explain to people that conservatives and conservatism have nothing to offer them. Literally no problem is solved with violence and cruelty and selfishness. It does not provide anyone with anything. They are preying on the worst, weakest parts of you — and when you fall for it, even on a singular issue, you are providing them with legitimacy. You are failing yourself. You are failing your responsibility to the world to understand why their answers are fundamentally poison.

    @ryanhoulihan I wish there was a way to knock some sense into people, but at this point they are either too embarrassed to admit they've been gravely wrong about their political party, or are just too driven by hatred for anyone who isn't them to care, oblivious to the fact that empowering the people who hate the same people as them isn't going to gain them anything in the long run. They'll all be in the same boat as the rest of us and all we'll be able to say then is "I told you so".
