Just to clarify a technicality from some of today’s headlines:
There was actually a <third> person diagnosed with highly pathogenic avian influenza today according to the CDC dashboard. It was the <second> among dairy workers (both of whom had conjunctivitis, whereas the case of an infected poultry worker presented with fatigue).

Bolts are being replaced by Blazers at Chevy but the U.S has definitely made an affordable EV. If you qualify for the rebate, and especially if your state has its own, it’s much cheaper than an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle.

That’s just upfront. Then consider that maintenance is roughly 30% less and you’ll typically pay 30-60% less on energy/mile compared to an ICEV. Article from January but still.

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt Is Now A $19,995 EV Bargain:

@tmstreet @TonyStark And of course the stink is from toxic air pollutants that infiltrate into the home if you have an attached garage.

Attached garages are consistently identified as a major (if not the major) source of carcinogenic benzene in homes with attached garages. Because of ICEs.

For / and other massive industrial publishers, increase in paper volume in -driven open access is the main source of growth that is presented to investors. More papers needed to stay afloat in always-increasing proprietary bibliometric sea, bigger profits. On the other end of the business, surveillance backed analytics tools to insurance companies and law enforcement is the biggest growth driver.

These are the companies we have paid billions in public money to over a generation. Another 13% hike in profits, now £3 billion annually. When will we find the courage to say enough is enough?

@jonny The last time I lead a paper, I pushed for an Institute of Physics publication. In part because it’s owned by the Institute and not by the publishers you referred to.

But is that justified? I only have a suspicion that society journals would behave better and don’t really know.

Plus I acknowledge society journals may not always be an option for all fields.

curt_nordgaard,
@curt_nordgaard@mstdn.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez Thanks, that’s a very good point. IOP, ACS, AGU, APA etc etc probably worth taking a few minutes to learn about them before submitting to a society journal.
Although I can say that the American Academy of Pediatrics publishes several journals and is a very worthwhile organization.

Tomorrow, The Dutch will have 12 hours with a negative (day ahead) electricity price, and a couple of hours with a price equal to zero.
This is caused by a high production of wind energy in NW-Europe, combined with a relative low ('Sunday') power demand.

Although to a lesser extend, neighbouring countries witness as well a significant number of hours with negative power prices.

I expect, this phenomenon will increase significantly in coming years. Agree?

curt_nordgaard,
@curt_nordgaard@mstdn.social avatar

@BM_Visser 👍 I also wonder how well that increase has been quantified, for planning purposes, and whether anyone is able to adjust demand into those hours. Seems like it’s time to really implement those measures.

    breadandcircuses, to environment

    Most 11-year-old kids know that darker colors absorb heat and lighter colors do not. It's simple basic science. Nearly everyone has experienced the practical effect in daily life.

    So, what will happen when a very very large portion of ice, which is mostly white, melts and reveals dark ocean water below? Things get hotter, right?

    Yes, absolutely correct. And that's what is taking place right now in the waters around the South Pole.

    "Antarctica is missing an Argentina-sized amount of sea ice – and scientists are scrambling to figure out why"
    https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/30/world/antarctic-sea-ice-winter-record-low-climate-intl/index.html

    A huge amount of heat that was previously reflected back into space by the missing sea ice is now instead being absorbed by the Southern Ocean. It's a self-reinforcing feedback loop that results in further sea ice loss, in turn further speeding up the temperature rise and melting more ice, ad infinitum.

    🚨 We are in a climate emergency.🚨

    curt_nordgaard,
    @curt_nordgaard@mstdn.social avatar

    @breadandcircuses @moirearty Just eyeballing, but it also seems like the rate of deviation change has increased through this most recent set of data (e.g. compare the rate in the spring through to the last couple of weeks).

    I suppose the rate could change direction abruptly but that would be pretty anomalous, no? It may very easily reach a greater deviation before the rate of change slows and then reverses direction.
