I wonder if Mastodonians can come up with a good enough stunt to get Last Week Tonight to make an official account here on Mastodon?

If you're in any of the places in California this rain is pounding down and tweeting photos/videos, please use the hashtag so folks can find it.

Dr. Daniel Swain was just saying that with the state of Txitter, we've lost a great central site for sharing live weather/climate info. Let's make sure people can find it on Mastodon.

Dear abled people:

Every time you are asked to provide accessibility and resent "more work", use that feeling to reflect on how much more work it is for people WHO ARE DISABLED to do the work an ableist society requires for just about every interaction in our day (bureaucracy re disability/poverty, inaccessible communication/infrastructure/culture/events/school/work/hospitals/emergency response, etc). and join us in working for systemic change that will make it easier for all of us.

What are accounts on Mastodon that you think I should follow that have fewer than 500 followers? I'm tired of seeing the same folks boosted who get followed & boosted because other folks are following & boosting them - not because they're must-follows. Let's pump up folks who are unjustly overlooked!

For me, I like to follow folks who are anti-ableist (and anti- other oppressions), thoughtful, witty, caring, and not putting their heads in the sand re fascism or climate. (hobbies TK)

We need at leasst 17 more people using the hashtag (on public posts) to have a shot of trending.

Why do I care? Because Mastodon isn't the greatest for discoverability. I think BikeNite is a cool community and I would like to see more cyclists able to find us and participate in this a/synchronous weekly structured chat. @mastobikes @fedibikes @bikenite

If you like written how-tos rather than video how-tos, make sure that there's more financial incentive to write.

You might have noticed, but our society is doing more & more to steal the work of writers (and creators in general), while also laying off the few who had half-decent employment.

The reason there are a lot of video tutorials is that at least YouTube pays.

Be the person who subscribes to a writer if you want to encourage writing.

If you're anti-fascist and use the word "moron" as an insult, you might want to stop doing that. The word was invented by a eugenicist to further eugenicist framings. https://archive.ph/B8AZn

"A wildly successful, illegal 3-day strike by the Andover Education Association in November has reverberated statewide for educators in Massachusetts.

The lowest-paid instructional assistants got a 60 percent wage jump immediately. Classroom aides on the higher end of the scale got a 37 percent increase.

Members won paid family medical leave, an extra personal day, fewer staff meetings, and the extension of lunch and recess times for elementary students."

"Ban cars" has to be matched by equal or even more zeal to make things accessible. It just has to be.

Because "ban cars" is not the same as "most people can go without cars". It is ableist to say "ban cars" before you've shown equal ire for inaccessibility. And, frankly, I haven't seen that from the "ban cars" crowd. So you sound like "fuck disabled people" when you say that.

Google Alert popped up another "gem". Puff piece coverage of a company that "gives jobs" to disabled adults.

  • Abled founders speak, not a single disabled person interviewed.

  • Stated that 80% disabled people are unemployed but didn't go into how many workplaces flout ADA, Sect 504 and Sect 508.

  • No mention of whether it's a "sheltered workshop" and what disabled people are paid compared to what abled people are paid in the company.

If you're a progressive org but don't feel alt text & image description is "worth your time", how in hell am I supposed to trust you with politics? With social justice?

If you can't do it for communication on social media, I have no reason to trust you'll suddenly muster the oomph on a larger stage.

glightly, to earthquake
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

Folks, when you're in a rush to communicate news in images, remember that Mastodon's image editing window has a link to perform Optical Character Recognition on the images of text so you can save a little typing time trying to create alt text (but do proofread the OCR).

If you are abled & find providing alt text & image description to be a barrier:

Disabled people are routinely asked by our power structures & by abled people (even our friends/family) to go through additional physical, mental and emotional barriers daily.

So if you think this small barrier of being asked to provide equitable alt text keeps abled ppl from doing things, it's good to extend that thinking to the ableist way our society is constructed & what the effect of that is on disabled ppl.

To give a flavor of how extra the Fediverse reply guy is, apparently someone just looked up my university email to write me and complain that I'd blocked them.

I have cPTSD. Blocks don't only happen because of people who earn them, but because if/when I get triggered, it literally physically hurts me for hours or even days, and I'm trying to keep from being triggered.

But if you went digging up my university email to complain that I blocked you, you may be someone who earned a block.

I wish I had kept count all along so I'd be able to show you the ratio of how abled cyclists react when I post about inaccessible cycling infrastructure, policy, and processes.

Suffice it to say, the number of people who make the time to ablesplain to me greatly outnumbers the people who join me in the activism required to change the inaccessibility.

Abled people: the primary function of the alt text field is not to act as a little joke for other sighted people. It's not a fucking easter egg despite that having been normalized by XKCD.

You can certainly have a sense of humor in the alt text field just as you do the text text field, BUT after you've actually provided equitable alt text & img description. Transcribe the fucking text that sighted people are given in the image and describe any other relevant non-text parts of the img.

Disabled people are used to being used as cudgels in arguments between abled car-centrists and abled cyclists.

I was invited to speak to @parkingreform about this and one of the things we all discussed that calls the bluff on both ableism and car-centrism is that if cars need to be somewhere because people with certain disabilities need cars, then make all the parking spaces disabled parking spaces.

Something important I think most folks are unwilling to reckon with is that democracy has been so undermined in so many places, and we have so many big crises (global climate change bats last) that if we want a better world for ourselves and our progeny, that those of us who have not been activists and have not been engaged can no longer continue doing that.

It's never been clearer that democratic freedom requires constant informed vigilance.

I'm tired.

I'm sure others are.

But there it is.

From today's walk. This is West Covell Blvd. in

Several things illustrated here:

  • Amt of space given to drivers compared to every other transportation mode.

  • Stroad approved, but only one side's residents get a soundwall, apartment side (more likely to be students) does not.

  • Ficus pumila vine overgrows half an already-narrow sidewalk. (Bad choice for that wall.) Wheelchair users would have to use cycle lane but there's no curbcut or driveway to switch.

(Non-rhetorical question:) How many of you have ever gotten an audience with your elected representative?

Even in a small town, I was never able to. Developers routinely got meetings and were also given agenda time in City Council meetings instead of having to queue for 3 min of public comment time. ?
