Depending on how you look at it, I either grew up in the periphery of the labor movement, or atop it, or surrounded by it. For a kid, labor issues don't really hold a lot of urgency - in places with mature labor movements, kids don't really have jobs, and the part-time jobs I had as a kid (paper route, cleaning a dance studio) were pretty benign.

I have NOT read this paper yet so this is not a Cat endorsement yet but the title and premise is good enough to share ๐Ÿ‘€

"behaviors that might initially seem irrational may be modeled as optimal use of information available to people within the task"

"researchers and policymakers need to exhaust alternative explanations based on peopleโ€™s goals and social environments before assuming irrationality and to use methods that engage participants as partners not just targets of interventions."

All applied scientists nod. (I disagree that this argument is new)

grimalkina,
@grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

"Assuming that people are reasonable highlights the need to engage with people who are the targets of interventions. This turns them from targets into partners and also acknowledges the systems they inhabit. This more participatory and deliberative engagement can manifest in methods such as qualitative interviews, focus groups, citizens assemblies, engagement with citizen science initiatives..."

again ๐Ÿ‘ ! But also widespread in areas that would've been nice to cite here

I find it worthwhile to go back now and again and look through analyses of why a piece of software succeeded or failed.

It's always particularly illuminating to look at three things:

  1. The role of leadership in the failure.
  2. How much leadership got paid regardless/what happened to leadership afterwards.
  3. What happened to the rank-and-file who actually build the software.

The story is always basically the same, with a few variations on the themes.

"Surprisingly, our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless."

Great demo of a pervasive dynamic, to get through a gate in fields that activate gender biases we require women to be at the highest achievement level to be treated comparably to lower achieving men

https://www.brookings.edu/articles/math-intensive-fields-have-a-gender-problem-the-men-are-worse-at-math/

Also potentially demos the backlash effect, where socially punishing bias incongruence can be considered more important than getting the value of the work itself. Highly technical women can be hated FOR technical achievement

Look at how the college protestors are infantilized by the media. They're being misled by outside agitators; they're just kids who don't know better, right?

But they're old enough to jail? To draft them for wars of profit? Ok, I guess?

today's helldivers 2 discovery: it has an unlockable revolver. makes sense, right? lots of games do.

you fire six out of six shots and reload. your character uses a speedloader. makes sense!

you fire two shots and reload.

  • if you're in a fight, your character uses a speedloader, and you lose four
  • if you're not, they reload it round by round, and you lose none

this is an incredible level of attention to detail holy shit. nobody does this!!

Programmers: ยซcreate vast complexity that no one person could comprehend in order to render a web pageยป

Also Programmers: What if we made the programming language English, required that the compiler run on a monstrously huge array of GPUs, and set it up so it only did what we ask sometimes, and other times just do nonsense, but we don't know which is which?

It's something to look at an author's work and find that it has grown richer, deeper, and more meaningful to you as you get older despite the age you were introduced to it.

I need to reread The Last Unicorn.

@hrefna Yes, that book is amazing. I watched the cartoon countless times as a child but once I read the book I realized it is not a childrenโ€™s story at all, even if the adaptation is fairly faithful. It is rich and deep and gets richer as I get older and return to it.

The lines stick with you. Like โ€œThere are no happy endings, because nothing ends.โ€

(Peter S Beagle is incredible for this. Not Wanted on the Voyage, a disturbing retelling of Noahโ€™s Ark, is still powerful twenty years on).

Seriously, once you learn to look for this pattern you can't unsee it. It's everywhere.

A well-intentioned leftist gets sucked into some line of thinking that ends up with them now being anti-<whatever>. Sometimes organically, sometimes actively recruited in.

Either way, it is extremely challenging for people who are in the margins and especially in multiple margins.

Surprising almost no one:

"Return-to-office mandates at some of the most powerful tech companies โ€” Apple, Microsoft and SpaceX โ€” were followed by a spike in departures among the most senior, tough-to-replace talent."

And regarding managers, one person posits: "Maybe managers leave shortly after mandates ... 'because itโ€™s easier to manage a team thatโ€™s happy.'"
