I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

This was my first foray into stone carving. It evolved spontaneously as I was working, but he has the look of Pan about him?

I just got a lovely block of stone as a birthday gift and I'm very excited to do more carving this summer.

I used Faulds stone carving chisels, and a (too soft) sandstone.

I got my Spotify wrapped recently and it was almost identical to 2022 (a year of lazy listening) and completely lacking some of my most favourite genres.

So, if you have the time, I'd love some suggestions of Classical music to listen to. Old, new, opera, just anything you enjoy. Playlists welcome too.

Thank you in advance.

Motor #emissions could have fallen by over 30% without #SUV trend, report says

"A report showed SUVs now represented a majority of the new car market (51%).

Automotive companies market SUVs intensively as they provide the most profit: they are sold at premium prices but have a proportionally lower manufacturing cost.

The authors of the report called for governments to place restrictions on vehicle sizes to reverse the SUV trend."

@CelloMomOnCars First you scream ICE is bad, move to EV. Now you want to restrict the size of the EV. Stop moving the goal post!! I will soon be purchasing a mid-size truck EV, trying to do my part. I live in a city of a million people plus and can go for weeks without encountering a pedestrian. The only pedestrians I see are in parking lots where I drive at a crawl. A truck that sits higher than my car will make it easier to see said pedestrians. One step at a time, please.

In the J6 DOJ trial (the big one) yesterday was Trump's deadline for filing pretrial motions.

(See attached minute order)

No surprise, his lawyers filed a bunch of motions just before the deadline.

Here's the thing about defense motions in criminal proceedings: Defendants are given lots of leeway to file motions that don't have a chance. The lawyers run into trouble only if they lie or misrepresent facts.

This is because of how much is at stake in criminal cases.

It does seem to me that there is an enormous difference between the worst self checkouts, which remain awful, and the best ones, which are okay. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2023/10/self-checkout-kiosks-grocery-retail-stores/675676/

@harrymccracken I think self checkout is the greatest thing since the turnpike pass. I stopped shopping at Lowe’s for years for their lack of self checkout and went to Home Depot instead. The only annoying self checkout locations now are grocery stores that need to weigh items.

If you're finding Mastodon's interface is too dark or too light, you can change its colour scheme to someting that suits your eyes better.

On the website:

  1. Click ⚙️ Preferences
  2. From the "Site Theme" menu choose Dark, Light or High Contrast
  3. Click "Save Changes" at the top right

On the official app:

  1. Click the ⚙️ icon to go to settings
  2. Choose Dark, Light or Automatic (which uses whatever your phone uses)

On third party apps:
Go to the settings section of your app.

hudsoch,
@hudsoch@ohai.social avatar

@feditips Is there a way to get Mastodon to open at the exact spot you left off? Invariably, I open much farther up in the feed and have to scroll back down. I also get the dreaded’Load missing posts’ message with the same results if I click it.

Just finished this, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the UK parliamentary system and UK democracy. It’s a very readable deep dive into what does and doesn’t work at the moment (only published last month), and although it’s depressing along the way, it points to some relatively straightforward fixes at the end. We can change this if we choose. Read it and tell your MP!

    hudsoch,

@helenczerski Thanks for the recommendation. From the other side of the pond, parliament looks just as disfunctional as congress. This should help clear up why.
