Just discovered the Dropbox had turned on -- without my assent -- a feature that let it use what I've stored there for AI training, which means it was being sent to "Open"AI. I had to opt out, and only did it after being alerted here on Mastodon to the fact that this was happening. (h/t @natematias)

This is a disgusting betrayal, and I'm looking for an alternative to Dropbox.

(Update: This story from CNBC says Dropbox CEO claims the sharing "only" occurs if you use the AI tools in the site.)

@dangillmor @natematias I left dropbox years ago when they messed with linux file system support. Check out syncthing if you only need to sync files. If you need more of the cloud functionality, check out nextcloud / owncloud.

Darryl George, a Black student in Texas, has been told he will be removed from his high school and sent to a disciplinary alternative education program after a month of suspension because he has dreadlocks. His family have filed a formal complaint and a federal civil rights lawsuit, saying Texas's governor and attorney general failed to enforce the CROWN Act, which outlaws discrimination based on hairstyles. Nobody deletes a git repo for "low views." don't delete anything unless someone tells them to / they need to, because, why would you? It costs nothing to just leave it there. Unless.

    I get Romney is retiring & doing his tell all book but—

    1. We already knew all this. Him affirming it makes zero difference.
    2. He's still in power. He can vote w/Dems & pass BBB, child tax credit, abolish filibuster, etc—but won't.

    I tend to avoid social media. I don't even really know how to use it; but when I'm on here, I see that whole "community" thing that I'm not very familiar with.
    Like people getting support when they're down and all that.
    Sometimes I try to imagine
    myself getting that.

    "You are a great person."
    "You are worthy of love."
    etc.

    But if it were me, I know it would just feel empty. How could any of you possibly know me?

    FML. My apartment management just showed up to install the new internet package, which sounded pretty good (Symmetrical Gbit). Dude comes in to set it up and is trying to install a wifi access point behind my couch. I told him I don't need an access point because I have my own mesh network, I just need to connect the new modem to my network rack. He starts trying to explain that the internet doesn't require a modem, so I'm like confused af.

    After like 10 minutes of trying to figure out wtf this guy is talking about, I realized they've installed an apartment complex wide wifi mesh network, so there is no individual internet packages anymore. Everyone in the entire apartment complex is just connected to one big wifi network. They claim all the users are segmented by VLAN, but I genuinely don't think I've ever wanted something less in my life.

    @GW Living breathing nightmare indeed. 😥 I would also throw in interference from foreign powers as one of the many causes of this. Easier to fight a disinformation and public opinion campaign than a military campaign against the states.

    When using a possessive apostrophe and the word/name ends in an S, do you personally add an S after the apostrophe?

    eg: Mavis' sweater, versus Mavis's sweater

    @christianselig Mavis’s is the correct form but most people at least in AmE were (incorrectly) taught Mavis’. Probably because the exception to the rule is prefer Jesus’ over Jesus’s.
