That's an awesome swing! This bear mus be heavy. Write a positive review: "This swing was tested by bears”

A bear keeps getting on a swing of someone who puts up a camera to film it

@stux @maudenificent recently learned there’s a facility that tests things for bearproofness by setting bears loose on them https://youtu.be/Xn_O2li_jpk

folk: Don't miss Open House next weekend. It's your annual chance to see inside some of the city's most interesting buildings. While the tours are mostly booked out, there's a stack of cool places you can go without a booking https://openhousemelbourne.org/the-weekend-2023/

Melbourne's famous graffitied laneways are going green. Here's how greening permits could transform the city

Okay, question for the and :

What is social media for? Both as you see it in general and for you. Why are you on here? Why are you / aren’t you on other social media platforms?

Thank you all!

joannaholman,
@joannaholman@aus.social avatar

@mariyadelano

I'm on instagram and facebook primarily to communicate and share with people I know in person, although I do also have an instagram account for my photography project that's more broadly targetted.

I'm here on mastadon to share interesting things I find online and see what other interesting things others have found/made. I also see developing community here as creating a bit of a brains trust. If I am routinely helpful, when I need advice or information others will probably help me. I used twitter a lot to keep up with local goings on (eg. interesting events, places to visit). I haven't found quite enough locals to do that super well here but hopefully in time Mastadon will become that.

Totally didn't see this coming!

Jokes aside, it was bad before but now I have completely given up on buying ebooks or go through Kindle Unlimited as a result. Instead, I do it the slow way, via Goodreads or social media recommendations. That's the only way I know to cut through the noise, and I feel bad for the because they have to battle through this trash to be found 😔

@joannaholman@aus.social avatar

@liztai I saw a post elsewhere suggesting the goal of these AI books isn’t primarily purchases by humans, it’s to have AI bots “read” them on kindle unlimited to accrue royalties

    I'm so excited to share that my book, HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS: INSIDE THE SYSTEMS THAT SHAPE THE WORLD, will be out on October 17th of this year, on Riverhead Books. It's about the globe-spanning systems we've built to meet our needs: what systems like electricity, water, transportations and telecommunications have in common, how they work, and what needs to change to make them resilient, functional and equitable.

    You can preorder it now at:

    I am passionate about Eurovision to a degree that most people find kinda weird. I was at an event last week and a friend was asking me for my thoughts about the recent show. Someone else who'd just joined the conversation asked my friend if she was into Eurovision and she said "not really, but I love that she loves it"

    The conversation quickly moved on but that comment stuck with me. It made me feel so cared about. I want to be the kind of friend who loves that my friends have found things in life they love deeply, even when they're those aren't the same things I love. I want to delight in other people's particular joys

    Finally getting to an !

    I'm Joanna. You might have known me on twitter as joannamuses. I live in Melbourne on the lands of the Kulin Nation.

    I work in banking deceased estates (which is a stressful and morbid way to make a living) but am interested in a bunch of other things. I'm obsessed with , get a lot of joy out of trashy dance music and have been getting into lately. I'm always interested in non-fiction recommendations. I post quite a bit about things happening in and love discussing what might make this place better. I'm an amateur , mostly of and cute animals (instagram links in bio). Long walks through Melbourne make me happy. I'm also currently trying to learn to speak

    Some other interests I probably won't post that much about but would be interested to follow discussions on are and spirituality, and Indigenous history and culture.
