Sadly, what the ruling party keeps giving them instead is radical irrationality – ignorance over information.

    It's not about a "private" account, exactly. It's about being free to decide what you want to see indexed. The default has been "no indexing" - I don't mind an opt-in for those who'd like to be indexed, but I see an opt-out as a breach of the former contract.

    What worries me is that step by step, everything is turned into a mere question of "majority", which is of course easy to support while you don't match the prey patterns of any hate groups (yet).

    @weirdwriter

    @supernovae

    I'd say it is a common fallacy that "we" consider ourselves absolutely able to identify and suspend hate. I do believe that you give your best.

    But "we" can only have some keywords detected, and possibly identify the type of attack that "we", too, would feel threatened by.

    Also, "we" can't spot the vile lingo and innuendos that look unsuspicious to "us". And "we" certainly don't monitor all topics that matter to any marginalized group.

    "We" aren't "all of us".

    Imagine chatting with a friend in a pedestrian zone.

    Somebody texts the city council: Show who's chatting about "gender-affirming care"!

    A giant spotlight beams at you. That somebody abuses you.

    You run into the city hall and complain.
    You get told:

    🀷 How else shall people find a bakery?
    😯 Our algorithms should've prevented that.
    🧐 Nobody I know was ever spotlit. Not a real problem.
    βš–οΈ It was an opinion, not abuse.

    Being in a public space does not imply that your words should be indexed and made available to everybody through search.

    No matter how "convenient" it may be for others to be able to search each and every conversation content, in hindsight.

    No matter how many surveillance fanatics try to implement that, world-wide.

    @hughster @supernovae

    Sure. The same "tools" are available to marginalized and targeted groups. It 's just that we, as being more privileged, are less forced to invest time into our self-defense.

    That changes dramatically once you have dedicated hate groups that literally specialize on harassing you whenever they can. I sincerely doubt that we belong to such a group, so pointing to "tools" is not helpful for everybody.

    Yesterday we published our 2022 Financial Report. When people saw Thunderbird raised $6.4M in 2022 from donations, one question was asked frequently: "Do you have mega-donors?"

    Nope. We just have awesome people πŸ’™

    Some stats we didn't publish in the report:

    -We had 76 donations that were $500 or above, which is less than 1% of total donations.

    -95% of our donations were less than $100.

    -The largest donation was €3000.

    -Our average donation amount $15.78.

    Thank you family!

    In Mai 8th in 1945 the Allies of World War 2 accepted Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender. It marks the end of WW2 in Europe and the Nazi regime with it.

    Let’s make sure we don’t need another one, anywhere, ever. That work certainly didn’t end back then and is far from done today.

    I feel like a resource like this should include instances regardless of reputation except in situations where they break the law.

    Wdyt? How should we handle this, and what other inclusion rules would you like to see?

    katzenberger,

    @dansup "unless breaking the law" is not a good idea, since there is no unique "law" but a whole zoo of jurisdictions, including laws made by dictators and authoritarian regimes that I would not want to see in control of what I get to see.

    I suggest that rules for exclusions be published, so you know what to expect from a curated site. Also, document under which jurisdiction you are under.

    Apart from that, the person maintaining the site gets to decide. If you disagree, set up your own site.

    So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

    Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

    Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

    From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

    It's enshitification in action.
