Can't Buy My Silence, a group that campaigns for legal changes related to misuse of nondisclosure agreements, estimates that 95 per cent of civil suit settlements in Canada now include one. Those cases range from lawsuits over bad investment advice to insurance claims, real estate disputes, building construction defects, sexual harassment cases and more.
A huge thank you for whose have supported The Gamer's Tavern this month on Ko-Fi 🍻!
In matter of transparency, I've posted a detailed report of The Gamer's Tavern's monthly costs and services here: https://ko-fi.com/the_gamers_tavern
Thank you :drac_heart:
Aside from the monetary stuff, The Gamer's Tavern is a cozy place because it's full of amazing people...you. I'm so lucky for our path to have crossed 😊
🇬🇧 On #PressFreedomDay, it's a disgrace for the West that Julian #Assange remains in prison for his unwelcome revelations!
"Intimidating the press is to keep us ignorant" Stella Assange told me. Only #transparency will allow us to control those in power!
#ML#Science#Transparency#Reproducibility: "Machine learning (ML) methods are proliferating in scientific research. However, the adoption of these methods has been accompanied by failures of validity, reproducibility, and generalizability. These failures can hinder scientific progress, lead to false consensus around invalid claims, and undermine the credibility of ML-based science. ML methods are often applied and fail in similar ways across disciplines. Motivated by this observation, our goal is to provide clear recommendations for conducting and reporting ML-based science. Drawing from an extensive review of past literature, we present the REFORMS checklist (recommendations for machine-learning-based science). It consists of 32 questions and a paired set of guidelines. REFORMS was developed on the basis of a consensus of 19 researchers across computer science, data science, mathematics, social sciences, and biomedical sciences. REFORMS can serve as a resource for researchers when designing and implementing a study, for referees when reviewing papers, and for journals when enforcing standards for transparency and reproducibility." https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adk3452
Prominent academic publishers agreed that #ChatGPT and Co. should not be listed as the author of a scientific paper, as AI is not responsible for the content. Did everyone listen? We conducted a search in WoS and Scopus and found 14 papers with ChatGPT as the "author":
National Security threat assessment leads to protection visa cancellation:
“What risk does an 68-year-old Palestinian woman with diabetes, reliant on the care of others, pose to our national security?” questions Australia Palestine Advocacy Network.
🇬🇧 We call for #transparency in the EU Commission's #DigitalServicesAct enforcement actions against internet platforms - do they respect fundamental rights and freedom of speech or do they encourage censorship and #uploadfilters? Let's guard the guards! #Pirates
With Pessach cleanup you figure why the ingredients are listed on stuff. Because they MUST BE, not because they WANT TO.
sigh (gets the magnifier glas)
With #IzzyOnDroid that's the other way around. There they are listed for #transparency (see the library section for each APK at https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid). Unfortunately, no way (yet) to transport that to the Android clients…
Absolutely, transparency and accountability are essential for a healthy democracy. How can we ensure that all elections are fair and free from fraud? #democracy#transparency
"Completely agree! One way to ensure fair and fraud-free elections is by implementing secure voting systems, independent oversight, and promoting voter education and participation. Together, we can strengthen our democracy. #democracy#transparency"
Federal Judge Rules That ProPublica’s Lawsuit Over #Military Court Access Should Move Forward
The U.S. government lost its bid to dismiss part of the #lawsuit, which would force the military to comply with a #law meant to make the military justice system more transparent.
🐴🔍 POLITICO Europe
reports that Commission President von der Leyen has at several occasions addressed the European Horse Network (EHN), but these meetings are missing in VDL’s public calendar and her log of meetings with #lobbyists 🤔
'... as work done by my team of chemistry researchers suggests, up to 90% of tattoo inks in the U.S. might be mislabeled. This isn't just a case of a missing pigment or a minor discrepancy. These inks contained potentially concerning additives that weren't listed on the packaging.'
Electoral Bonds legalised a route for political parties to secretly funnel unaccounted money from India and abroad into their coffers. But, no one is punished. No one expected they would be. We have been trained by experience to expect so little of democracy and its institutions. Nitin Sethi writes.
A year ago he released the promised algorithm for determining content pushed upon you (if you use twitter).
Perhaps more surprisingly, He admitted that even internally, that the #spaghetti_code comprising it isn't even fully understood internally by their staff. That's more #transparency than was expected.
But now, just a few hours ago, he released the source for #xAI's #Grok chatbot too, under the #Apache_license:
SC has managed to retrieve some of the ground it had steadily ceded to the Executive. It remains to be seen, if, on this decision and in cases in the future, it can stay the course. Christophe Jaffrelot writes.
