Picture this, if you will. The love child of Resident Evil and Final Fantasy Tactics. Sounds wild, right? But hold your horses, it’s a real game and it’s called Gorky 17 (or as some folks might know it, Odium).

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “What a bizarre mix, it must be absolutely ludicrous!” And you know what? You’d be spot on. But remember, we’re talking “absurd in a way that makes you giggle and want more” kind of ludicrous.

This gem could only have been forged in the unique fires of 90s Poland. Its plot, oh boy, it’s something else. Picture a NATO task force playing detective in Poland to uncover the secrets of a Russian project gone belly-up.

You might be guessing aliens, right? Nope. It’s zombies. Is it ever not zombies?

So here’s the thing: you’ve got to kill these zombies. And these aren’t your garden-variety “braaains” zombies, no sir. These fellas tote guns. This means positioning your troops more carefully than your chess pieces. Why? Because these zombies are packing, my friend.

What takes the ridiculous factor of Gorky 17 up to 11, though, is the voice acting. Remember how we used to cringe at 90s video game dialogue? It’s like Tommy Wiseau got reincarnated as a game character.

So, if your ears are craving some vintage cringe, or if you’re a connoisseur of the unique and strange, Gorky 17 is your golden ticket.

You don’t need a NASA supercomputer to run this either. Got a modest PC? You’re good to go. It’s compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux. If your machine isn’t prehistoric and you’ve got a bit of disk space, you’re ready for some zombified action. And if not, well, might be time to part ways with that old 486, eh?

I took this beauty for a spin on my Steam Deck. A little tinkering on the experimental branch of Proton and voila, smooth sailing!

When it first saw the light of day, it had a mixed bag of reviews. But you know what? I’d call it charming in retrospect. This type of quirky, extra-cheesy 90s gaming deliciousness just wouldn’t cut the mustard today.

Sadly, Gorky 17 never graced the consoles. But not to worry, any moderately current PC should have no trouble handling this 90s zombie-slaying nostalgia fest. Buckle up, folks! It’s going to be a bumpy, but hilarious ride!

@ajsadauskas @music @music Thanks for asking but this is such a hard question- it’s already challenging to do a top 10. One fave springing to mind is the Minutemen’s magnum opus, Double Nickels on the Dime, which out-punked everything in the US hardcore scene in the early 80s. Varied, clever, original, full of the joy of making tunes w your pals. Genre busting, in a way. Probably listened to this double LP over the years more than any other. Good times.
