Q4. Most cyclists drive motor vehicles at least sometimes, and some more frequently.

How has your cycling affected the way you drive? Are you slower and more careful? Do you do anything differently when encountering cyclists on the streets?

There’s a new playbook being written right now when it comes to the future of social media. The early-mover advantage is still in effect, and there’s a lot to figure out. Gone are opaque algorithms and the whims of any single company.

The fediverse represents a chance for quality journalism to shine again.

We talked to two leaders at fedi-forward publications — @TheConversationUS's @BostonAbrams, and @404mediaco's @jasonkoebler — about why they’re investing in the open social web, what they’ve learned so far, and their advice for other publishers just getting started.

What good is AI if you don't have a planet to use it on?

Microsoft released its 2024 Sustainability Report on Wednesday, and it's mostly bad news. Last year, Microsoft's emissions went up 29%, and it used 23% more water, primarily due to "new technologies, including generative AI."

Hi. Quick break from the posting for a serious PSA.

Please have a bottle of aspirin in your home. Make sure the tablets can be chewed as well as just swallowed. Make sure you remove any fiddly foil seal and such. Don't use this aspirin for regular pain relief, just keep it around and know where it is.

Hopefully, you'll never need it and will just feel silly for having it. But if a bad time comes for you someday, being able to chew aspirin when emergency services tells you may save your life.

The counter-protestors at #UCLA included a large number of bona fide antisemites. Their only care for Jewish safety is how to exploit it for political gain.

What I witnessed that Tuesday night chilled me to the bone - one of the men named in this article screamed at me and my colleague that white supremacy will rule and white violence will come. We were standing on the sidelines as observers.

The protest encampment at UC Berkeley is currently about 150 tents strong, but so far the administration has refused to call police or disperse the group. Classes continue, and commencement is on track to take place as scheduled.

So it CAN be done. But administrators have to want it.

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

Tomorrow at 11am, U.C Berkeley students and residents will be taking over Telegraph Avenue to demand that three blocks from Bancroft to Haste be immediately made car-free. I pulled data from the Berkeley police department and U.S. Census and found that in the neighborhood surrounding Telegraph:

• 71% of households do not own a car
• 77% of residents walk, bike or take public transit to work
• 72% of residents are people of color
• 96% of residents are under age 34

In 2023 the neighborhood saw 35 vehicle crashes which is a crash approximately every 10 days.

It is beyond inequitable to continue to allow dangerous, polluting vehicle traffic on this historic street which should be a safe, healthy space for people to shop and congregate.

My latest op-ed for Berkeleyside shows that banning cars from Telegraph will not only make the street more equitable and accessible but will improve public safety and provide an economic boost to local businesses.
