📣⚠️📣 Announcing a new home and license (AGPLv3) for Synapse and friends: going forwards Element’s work on Synapse, Dendrite & related server-side projects is going to be released as AGPLv3 rather than Apache.

https://element.io/blog/element-to-adopt-agplv3/

praveen,

@element @mynacol I think if you add a condition like this "If at any time the code stops being available under agplv3, this agreement will get cancelled automatically".

This will ensure someone buying Element in future can't stop giving the AGPLv3 version as their ability to provide alternative proprietary license depends on this cla.

mobian, to linuxphones

If you are not happy with your on-screen-keyboard () on Mobian, you might want to try out -osk-stub which is @agx's toy keyboard. I like the layout a lot, apparently it even features local text prediction (have not tried that yet).
Remember, it is a toy, so hold back on your support requests.

Installation TL;DR: apt install phosh-osk-stub && update-alternatives --config Phosh-OSK

P.S. The screenshot is using PureOS rather than Mobian, but it is available there just as well

praveen,

@mobian @agx I'm just missing the arrow keys on the terminal since the shift, works great otherwise.

praveen,

@agx @mobian thanks, I did not know about the space long press option! This is indeed nice!

praveen, to Facebook

Mainstream social media and messaging apps (#Facebook, #WhatsApp, #Instagram etc) are a nightmare for our personal data and freedoms.

We have #FreeSoftware replacements for most of these services but maintaining these services has recurring cost and effort.

diasp.in is a community project supported by volunteers. We offer #diaspora, #matrix and #xmpp services.

If we don't find enough volunteers by October 31st, we will be forced to shut it down.

Please volunteer at https://diasp.in/volunteer

praveen,

@goku12 we were probably running a bigger server than necessary, but matrix was taking 800+ GB disk space. Synapse needs huge RAM as well. No one actually volunteered to continue running so we did not do an exact calculation. We are hoping to keep the db for 3 more months if someone wants to continue running it (since Infomaniak offers 300 Euro credit for 3 months).

praveen,

We found volunteers to continue and , but had to drop , which also made it possible to scale down the server and reduce monthly cost to 1/3rd.

India blocks 14 apps including , @briar, threema, imo etc

"While tracking down one of the communication, agencies found that the mobile application does not have representatives in India and it is difficult to track down activities happening on the app".

Read more at:
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/india-blocks-14-apps-in-jammu-and-kashmir-for-spreading-terror/articleshow/99900313.cms

This is a dangerous precedent and opens the door to ban any app/service not having a presence in India. We should challenge this order in the Supreme Court.

praveen, to random

India first democracy to ban encrypted messaging apps on massive scale.

Only days before Press Freedom Day, India banned apps for secure communication because of "terrorists" use.

Random idea

Canva like tool tailored specifically for science communicators to create, beautiful animated infographics, 3D models for narratives.

To enhance the visual appeal of research and teaching material for engineers, scientists, and textbook authors.

Templates to create scientific illustrations and models with a set of primitives and modules you can pipe data into and then you can customise how it looks, functions and behaves

We have crossed 300 USD / 75% of building custom username support in @prav iOS.

Thanks if you already contributed and more contributions welcome.

We often get this question on why we are building on since is evil from many supporters.

praveen,

@TerryHancock @prav

Thanks for the suggestion, the description is updated to "Prav is a messaging app available on Android as private beta. This fund raiser is to build Prav iOS app based on Monal's Quicksy rebranded version."

Is this fine now? Or do you have suggestions for further improvements? The page has a detailed write up at the bottom.

Many of my friends are unhappy with members of private group and admin of public semi-anonymous groups being able to see phone number of a member since and currently takes the phone number as username.

We want to change this in @prav and allow Prav users to choose a custom username which will hide their phone number in groups.

We need your support to implement this. Please contribute to our fund raising campaign.

Thanks if already contributed!

We are working on rebuilding #gitlab 16.6.x on #debian #bookworm.

It is a good way to start contributing to debian as rebuilding is usually very simple.

I'd be happy to help if you are interested to join the effort.

We have to do this once in a month or two months usually.

This is the list of packages we need to rebuild.

https://storm.debian.net/grain/zgriFDoyuAzzWBTodnaD6Z

and this is the list of steps we usually need https://salsa.debian.org/ruby-team/gitlab/-/wikis/bookworm-backports

You can also contribute by testing the gitlab packages.

@kushal I header about MPRs sometime back https://invisv.com/articles/relay.html what is your opinion on it?

I have used it in the past, but now can't find it.

Though many of you might not be aware of (or even if you are aware might not actually be using) XMPP.

XMPP is a federated replacement for centralized messaging apps like etc

You are invited to try this with our community run public XMPP service at https://diasp.in/signup

We had to disable open sign ups due to spam, but we hope to reopen it soon.

... consider that and were both developed nearly exclusively by people working for firms. Yes, dynamic linking and maintenance of stable ABI promises are hard. That
means they cost. But static linking and volatile ABIs also have a cost--an opportunity cost. If that cost is both (1) hard to measure and (2) will be borne by economic actors outside your firm, the obviously rational choice is to not bother with dynamic linking and stable ABIs.

Thanks to great work by @weepingclown we have finally updated diaspora-installer package in unstable and it is ready for bookworm-backports once it migrates to testing.

There were many challenges to get it working with ruby 3.1 in debian bookworm and sid, but he solved these issues patiently one after the other. This was the bug he fixed https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1006547

and list of things he did https://tracker.debian.org/news/1494486/accepted-diaspora-installer-07182debian-source-into-experimental/

@debacle @prav @tigase @snikket_im @Monal We are leaning towards because it has background notifications working (we confirmed this). We have not yet confirmed if background notifications work, if we confirm this, we might go with Monal, since it seems more actively developed compared to . It also seems to have caught up with Siskin/Snikket on features with audio calls added recently.

I have personally found it impossible to get friends with iOS on whereas friends with Android were happy to join via . We are raising funds to build Prav App on iOS, please contribute and spread the word. https://opencollective.com/prav-ios

Since we announced the campaign, Monal developers announced they will be building the Quicksy variant so that is less work for us to fund (we still need to develop support for custom usernames and also pay for publishing).

16.8.2 is released in https://fasttrack.debian.net

We just missed the latest upstream release by 4 days, hopefully we can catch up soon.

Thanks to everyone who contributed and new contributors welcome!

See https://wiki.debian.org/gitlab/ if you are wondering why we do this when Gitlab Inc already has an omnibus package.
