@Jyoti All that power for… er… something? Apple really needs to go back to the drawing board on the software side of the iPad.

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti Absolutely no reason not to allow macOS on the iPad now beyond “Apple doesn’t want to”. I think it would be a game changer.

Apple TV Remote is now only in control center on iPhone.

And only an app on Apple Watch.

If Apple’s differentiates itself with deep hardware-software integration, it sometimes has glaringly odd software-software integration failures.

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@agiletortoise I was annoyed by the deprecation of the app in favour of Control Center. That said I've found the CC version more reliable than the app, which occasionally had trouble finding my Apple TV for some reason.

@Lorry Was the post in question removed by mods in December 2023 when it was written, and it took three months to appeal, or was this somebody trawling back several months and reporting a three month old post? Concerning either way.

From the get-go I wasn’t sure would get funded let alone reach a stretch goal, yet here we are all thanks to you. There’s so much work to do in the weeks and months ahead but I’m personally grateful and humbled we get to do it. Nothing was certain to say the least, but we’re all anxious to get started in earnest. Stay tuned for more in the days ahead. There are plans to make, pixel avatars to draw and so much more! 😄

@gedeonm Absolutely brilliant, really happy for you guys and meeting the plug-ins stretch goal is the icing on the cake!

Yesterday, I was in London marching with hundreds of thousands of others, maybe as much as half a million.

The BBC reported this as 'thousands.'

Every day, the bourgeois media hides Israel's crimes and hides the international movement to stop their war crimes.

Unless you actually know better, unless you're actually on the marches or search for alternative sources, you're being kept in the dark.

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti Reminds me of the Stop the War marches pre-Iraq invasion, when the number was over 1 million and sources like the BBC were spoon fed similar low figures by the Met et al.

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti Me too! Probably the first time I saw with my own eyes that the reality of a situation wasn’t being reported truthfully (that and well, pretty much everything else to do with the Middle East at that time).

I finally saw Babylon (2022) and here's my review of it:

https://bzangygroink.co.uk/archives/2023/08/15/babylon-2022/

(contains very minor spoilers)

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti This is a great review of a great movie! I truly don’t understand why Babylon is so polarising.

PS If you’re not already on it please consider getting a Letterboxd account, it needs more thoughtful reviewers like you!

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti I was hooked by the end of the first scene! There are so many sublime moments and I agree the negativity towards it feels like a good old-fashioned internet pile-on.

Letterboxd is brilliant for keeping track of movie watches and I’ve found its aggregated movie ratings really useful (Babylon scores 3.8/5 which is very respectable). https://letterboxd.com/film/babylon-2022/

It also has a lot of review shitposting which is something I have a love/hate relationship with (and I am plenty guilty of myself).

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti Totally support that stance! I was thinking the other day that the way Letterboxd works is ripe for a Fediverse clone. Probably the only reason there isn’t one is they’re not evil (yet? 😢).

If you’re just looking for film info (cast and crew etc), a less awful alternative to IMDB is TVDB. They have an API* which means there are third-party apps on hand.

  • Although it’s still a company and of course Twitter and Reddit have shown us how much we can trust companies with third-party APIs.
skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti You are so right. It’s all part of this techno-utopian ideal from the early 2000s that private companies crowdsourcing all their content was super great and definitely not going to end in disaster.

I’m ashamed to say I was on board with this lovely bright future myself, roughly until Twitter started going in the wrong direction c. 2013. These days I am increasingly of the same mindset as you that any future micro-content I create is on the Fediverse or GTFO!

skypunch,
@skypunch@mastodon.social avatar

@Jyoti Awful companies deliberately nuking swathes of user content seems to have become par for the course in the past 10-15 years doesn’t it? It can also be wanton cultural erasure (eg Twitter killing Vine).

It’s really sad how much digital history just vanishes. For a less nefarious example try browsing through the posts of a weblog from, say, five years ago and see how many of the links are dead. The Internet Archive does its best but there’s so much lost stuff.

It has been absolutely jam-packed -wise in , so maybe I should give a rundown of what’s happened in just the month of July…

  1. Ministerial statements on K Shanmugam (home affairs and law minister) and Vivian Balakrishnan (foreign affairs minister) living in huge state-owned properties. The Singapore Land Authority, who manages these properties, comes under the law ministry. But the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) cleared them of any wrongdoing.

Based on polls, looks like Artemis is winning for the name. Which is a great tribute to 🙏

I’ve been ambivalent about “new” Beatles material ever since Free As A Bird and Real Love were released in the mid 90s, but it’s hard not to be a little bit excited about this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65881813

You want the headset that recorded that kid's birthday in ?

You want superspoopy rendered versions of your eyes looking out of a visor at your friends?

YOU GOT IT.

You want an empty bank account?

YOU DEF GOT IT.
