@jake4480 @buru5 I am uncomfortable with the AssBuddy portion of its name. dont want that in my download history

synlogic,
@synlogic@toot.io avatar

@jake4480 @buru5 its like when in the 90s some entrepreneur wanted to build a website kinda like Craigslist but for building/home contractors. so they secured the domain name ExpertsExchange. they didnt appreciate fact that DNS is case insensitive and lots of kinky people out there with web queries they might want to keep private who would enter "expert sex change" and end up at their site

    @jake4480 but Biden has forgiven billions in college loans

    TikTok is de facto owned by the Chinese gov, which exercises totalitarian control within their own borders, plus has a known op to try to manipulate American voters and steal American IP. they are an evil actor on the world stage almost right up there with Russia and Iran

    I worked on the problem space for the State Dept, years ago

    synlogic,
    @synlogic@toot.io avatar

    @jake4480 the law Biden signed does NOT ban Tik-Tok or destroy it. it merely requires that it must change ownership. if an American buyer comes along they can take it over and service continues seemlessly. users who love it or depend on it can continue to do so

    if anything I'd argue the US gov should extend the same approach to other companies and services with Russian ownership or ties. like Telegram, LiveJournal, JetBrains, Kaspersky, others

    @Nonilex I have no expertise on this at all but (I'll chime in anyway haha) I would guess that if a baby squirrel spends enough time being taken care of by a human it will be hard to impossible for him to transition to life in the wild again. therefore a human parent forever, whether you always or someone else. no matter what you did the right thing by saving him

    @isaackuo super cheap and relatively easy to mass produce and with simple tools

    synlogic,
    @synlogic@toot.io avatar

    @isaackuo @swope the design shown in the story is imperfect it seems because looks like has one orientation where it presents no spike upwards. an ideal caltrop will always present a pointy thing upwards. I imagine if you know you can always deploy a large enough nunber to an area at once it becomes likely at least some will point up

    synlogic,
    @synlogic@toot.io avatar

    @isaackuo @swope k. I saw one photo with a flawed design I think, made out of 2 triangle plates

    theres a diff design that has like 4 spike-tipped rods all connected at a single common vertex at center, and all 4 spiky points face outward in perfect symmetry. as a kid I associated that design with ninja haha

    I think he's in... bad health. Really bad. Much worse than they've let on. Dementia symptoms worsening perhaps. Heart issues perhaps. I'm no doctor. But look at photos of him recently. Especially his face & eyes. Because thats where you can see it, typically, when someone is Unwell. And when their time is coming SOON.

    I prefer vim as my default code & text editor. Emacs does not fit my tastes as much but I respect it

    Both emacs & vim have advantages over, say, VS Code (& any other commercial GUI IDE). Among them? Less screen clutter, less resource use, (often) better reaction latency, no network need/killswitch, always free, open source, and less victim to surveillance capitalism

    How could have been avoided:

    1. During the 2013-2018 boom when tech workers as a class had maximum leverage, used some of the energy organizing broad tech unions and guilds instead of negotiating for fuck-you money and pulling up the ladder by telling other trades to “learn 2 code noobs”

    2. craft broadly populist multi-union legislation to raise taxes for “infra and natsec basic income fund”, for a living stipend to infra workers: railroad, steelworkers, electricians, OSS maintainers

    synlogic,
    @synlogic@toot.io avatar

    @analogist sounds wise. they say 2nd best thing to having done something in past (when ideal) is to do it now even when.timing is less so.

    I do think we should create a guild or union in the private sector & implement something like a UBI for programmers and FOSS devs, so we can rebalance out cash more equitably and ensure a kind of income floor, independently of gov

    govs move too slow and are too nosy & bureaucratic. better to err on side of action and initiative then tune things as we go
