RULE OF THUMB (OBSERVED):

if you make a computer game "these days" and you call it a Rogue-like, and, if you are under the age of 40-45 or so, then:

it is (almost certainly & nearly always) NOT A FUCKING Rogue-like!!!!!!

@jake4480 when they think "sudden death" makes something a Rogue-like, or, procgen, I'm like "Aw, thats sooo cute. So precious! Kids, get off my fucking lawn."

(vivid memories of plenty of sudden death games and/or procgen games before and outside of the early Roguelikes. hell the entire 70s/80s arcade game craze and home video game cartridge console industry was built on notion of sudden death AND losing all past progress! and soooo many early computer games used procgen...)

@maciekglowka @jake4480 ok I took a quick glance at your game Monk Tower. impression is 2 or 3. and age 39 is asymptotically close to 40 so... "I'll allow it!" (goes back to sleep in my coffin)

@isaackuo @jake4480 back in 2008 or 2009 or so I had a booth at a game con promoting my first (and I think the world's first commercial) Roguelike, Dead By Zombie. and I was selling licenses to it from the booth, in person. for like $5 or $15 IIRC. anyway many people walked up and bought a license. a group of girl scouts did (well, duh!) but also... one of the NetHack core DevTeam guys! he just walked up. forget his name, was kinda intimidated. I dont think was the NetHack "Isaac" dev but unsure

I hope to build a kind of de facto sequel to DBZ within my game Slartboz. SB has most of what it needs to do it. its engine is more sophisticated and exciting too imo

Slartboz has a whole plot line about a massive herd of zombies shambling slowly toward the hometown of Abro & his frens The Lazer Lizards. and Its Up To Them To Save The Day. that becomes "The Battle of West Pell". have video & screenshot previews of it up

    @Nonilex from what I can tell its due in part to Russia starting a new op to amplify illegal immigration attempts across our border. they're assisting people to do it, even actively recruiting them and paying for them to do it. they also have a worldwide program anyway to recruit mercenaries as fodder for their Ukraine war, and the skills and resources needed are similar for both logistical pipelines

    I notice that the Odysseus commercial lander a US company just plonked on the Moon cost NASA a little over $100M.

    By way of comparison, the Indian government's Chandrayaan-3 mission, the lander of which touched down in 2023, cost roughly $90M.

    So private space can be more expensive than 100% government agency-run missions.

    Apple wouldn't be doing this—at considerable expense—if they didn't consider such attacks to be plausible within the relevant lifetime of currently intercepted and retained messages (ie. not necessarily today, but within the statute of limitations of any crime you might be confessing to in an iMessage).

    @cstross agreed. also the MINOR detail that in about 11 months Trump may become President again. if he does is good chance he tries to become dictator. and/or give "evil" directives to the NSA, CIA, FBI, military etc. in that kind of world we'll want the strongest crypto & privacy/anon protections we can get out in the hands of the masses. esp if a de facto civil war / rebellion-by-patriots situation arises. sounds nuts but pattern of facts and history says its possible
