I heard this from @glennf and just tested on an Apple TV with tvOS 17.4 and a 10 minute screensaver interval and no YouTube screensaver kicked in before Aerial at the 10 min mark. The YouTube app version is 4.22.01 so it doesn’t appear to have recently updated. Something server side, maybe? Can anyone else report back if they’re still seeing the YouTube screeensaver (reference: https://joe-steel.com/2024-04-12-YouTubes-Screen-Stealer.html)

Everything's out of control
We can mask, we can mask
We're doing it from pole to pole

We can mask, we can mask
Everybody's taking the chance

Oh well, the safety dance 🎵

Hm. Ne. Mysteriös. Unerklärlich.

I'm increasing the price of Source Files, that puts GitHub, GitLab and BitBucket repositories into the Finder and Files app tomorrow.

Today is the last chance to get it at the lower price.

What I wanted from AI: hundreds of robot servants to automate away all my stupid, repetitive tasks, leaving me free to pursue the life of the mind.

What I expected from AI: self-driving cars maybe, at some point.

What I got from AI: a wrong-answer machine which steals money from me and is powered by burning the rainforest.

Google blew it. They could have stood back and said: "Ha! Microsoft is so desperate for hype, it is irresponsibly linking LLMs to Bing. Google instead stands for reliable search and won't do that." But instead, Google did. They knew better. They all knew better. LLMs have no sense of meaning. They should be nowhere near the expectation of credibility.

In the name
of everyone’s safety
airport security told us
to take off our shoes
and dump out our liquids,
but as I untied my laces
the guard leaned over and told me
“masks aren’t mandatory,”
and though I wanted to say
“what about everyone’s safety?”
I instead said nothing.

The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁

Let's not squander it!

A sold out 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.

Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.

Who will it be? 👀

Huhu Fediverse,

:BoostOK: Danke 💚

Here’s a WRITING TIP for you, something simple but which catches many of us out: If you have a great/fun idea for your story, use it now.

Don’t save your ideas for some nebulous other story which you might write tomorrow. You’ll have more ideas, I promise. Instead, make this story the best it can be.

Go ahead and break your fiction’s status quo. Go a step further and upend your narrative. Don’t hoard the big idea – use it now.

Still mad that instead of the semantic web and customizable, intentive user agents we've ended up with people breathlessly insisting we should clap when tech baron LLMs manage to compute the correct time twice an hour.

Shy Kids has constructed two short films for OpenAI where it uses “VFX+Sora” with accompanying breakdowns of the source Sora output, and what they did to make the video clips “work” in their montage narrative. If you’re doing this much work to prop up the output, and it still looks bad, then what the hell is the point? To say nothing of how tone deaf it is to showcase this during a huge VFX industry downturn. Bananas that they’re proud of this.
