How much does a solar eclipse dim daylight on Mars?

The animation shows 's capture of a solar eclipse by Phobos on March 25, 2019 (Sol 2358). Phobos is small and does not fully cover the disk of the sun, so dimming is noticeable but not comparable to that of a total eclipse on Earth.

How can we help conference attendees satisfy their curiosity? With these three questions I use at the start of every peer conference.

In Gale Crater, Mars.

This is your reminder that is constantly shilling billionaire ideology like Effective Altruism and is not to be fucking trusted.

Yes, they have cute birbs.

No, that does not exclude them from producing pro-billionaire propaganda that rots your brain.

@phryk@mastodon.social avatar

There's a reason their climate videos for example give completely undeserved weight to Direct Air Capture and other tech-based Carbon Capture "solutions" that are mythical at best.

There's a reason OpenPhilantropy, one of the biggest orgs pushing "Effective Altruism", keeps showering them with cash.

They're shilling out for billionaires.

Earlier today on Mars: Curiosity rover has been busy drilling a new sample hole. Attached is a HazCam image acquired after drilling. I have added a couple of arrows pointing at the small heap of powdered rock around the drill hole. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech

So.. I think I've given up trying to find an opensource toolchain for setting up lathe operations in . I'm seeing this as an opportunity to learn more gcode and hand write some of the simple operations I want to perform. Here I am exploring arc interpolation G02 and G03 in lathe mode (XZ plane G18).

@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@concretedog You’re on the right track with the G2/G3 paths. The real trick is the roughing passes. There are lots of ways to do that. Mostly, I’ve seen it done as a bunch of stepped straight passes and then a final arc pass. I suppose there’s no reason it couldn’t be done as a bunch of arc passes? Lots of factors like insert geometry, tool rigidity, chip load, depth of cut, etc..

@mcdanlj@social.makerforums.info avatar

@concretedog I may have missed you saying something about this earlier, but have you looked at inkscape gcodetools? I think it has lathe support.

can anyone suggest me a tech stack for creating apps for iOS, Android, web and desktop?

I'm gonna ask a question. It's just something I'm curious about and intrigued to see the reasons. Privacy is, after all, up to each individual...

If you don't have a photo of you on your profile... why?

is currently doing science in an eerie looking environment up on Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater, where rocks frequently appear having lace-like structures, as the one seen in this image:

Those shapes look so 'organic'. I wonder what chemical process (other than slime molds) causes the sediment to clump like that?

@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

Although IANAG, erosion seems to be the cause for many of those strange structures, both in large and small scale. On Earth too. Soft material goes first, harder material is left intact for a longer time. Here it all happens in a much weaker gravity, and a much thinner atmosphere.

Call your students co-learners, and tell them that you are learning to teach while they are learning the subject matter with each other. Students take statements from teachers as authoritative. In my experience, learners take to the nomenclature and the notion.

I scaffolded this with a specific statement about how this differs from traditional learning.
