Thought experiment: announces that #X/ is adopting and will federate.

How many of the instances who would federate with would federate with X? If not, what's the difference?

@rwg I will defederate any corporate platform on the which:

  • It is not based on
  • Doesn't implement federation by default but on a opt-in, per-user basis
  • Doesn't implement a peer federation, leaving users able to read, but unable to reply/comment.
  • Is accountable for monetization of hate speech
  • Has a lousy moderation

@rwg One difference is Meta is trying to stay in the good graces of the EU and other regulators. TBH without that it's unlikely they'd be bothering to implement ActivityPub.

Musk has already demonstrated he doesn't care at all. Even so, it might be worth trying it out and seeing if the bad actors can be blocked individually. Basically, the same as any large instance.

@rwg I am confident there would be a very strong overlap. https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110669416319993779

@rwg If announces that #x/ is adopting and will federate, then most instances would announce level 5 full self federation with #x until end of the year.

@rwg I think some would federate, but most would not.

@thisismissem What would be the difference, in your view?

@rwg @thisismissem For me a key question would be: does the instance (Twitter/Threads) systematically disrespect my own instance's rules. If so, it'll be defederated just like other such instances.

It may not be as easy as that. I recommend reading a thread by @lrhodes on the threats of Threads wrt disparities on scale among others.

For myself - having account-blocked + instance-level limited Threads - I wonder how I'll be able to follow development of the fedi, once Meta has taken over the lead here.

I follow ActivityPub hashtag in a column, but will mostly see just the replies to stuff that Meta engineers create in quick succession.
