Did anyone manage to figure out how this works?

Seems like there are some variables that ActivityPub servers search and replace?

Someone in the comments mentioned being able to do "something similar with images", but I couldn't find more details .

@stefan I’d guess they are using the domain of the the HTTP Signature key ID or signing entity (and requiring authorized fetch). Given the server knows the requesting domain, it’s easy to generate server-specific content.

@steve Yep, a few others pointed this out.

@stefan I liked this description I saw on the post haha

@jake4480 Interesting!

Maybe your server is more secure, and the information that's needed is not being passed along?

@stefan oh that was someone else probably suggesting that as an idea? But yeah my c.im definitely showed and I was looking at all the baffled comments beneath it 🤣😂🤣

@jake4480 Ohh, okay. Yeah, good reminder to use proper default values/placeholders in your code :-P

@stefan Can't you just send a different object depending on which AP server makes the request?
E.g. chaos.social requests the status -> it responds with a message containing chaos.social.

@johnny Yep, @defnull explained it here https://chaos.social/@defnull/111931270345655472

I'll have to play with this idea and see what else can be done.

This also reminds me how on Twitter you could post an entire site inside a tweet.

Has anyone done anything similar, or otherwise creative with embeds on the fediverse?

@stefan that was not intentional, in fact at one stage it was expressly against the cards policy, but towards the end it was no longer enforced. Riley, but could be fun.

@andypiper Ahh, I see. Yeah, I can imagine the kind of problems this could cause.

defnull,

@stefan It's a custom ActivityPup server that returns different results based on which instance requests that specific toot, or to which instance the activity is sent.

@defnull Ohh, that makes sense, thank you!

Hmm, now I wonder what else you could do with that.
