To celebrate a one year anniversary of my blog post "A netizen’s guide to Mastodon and the fediverse" [1], I'd like to rerun one of the polls [2] from the article:

Have you ever made a donation to a fediverse server admin?

And one more poll re-run:

Question for instance admins. Is your server financially sustainable?

I'd say this applies to people running their personal instances.

@stefan
For mine is not sustainable in the sense that there is no return. It's an expense that I can afford right now, but I see it as an investment in my own development

@stefan Have a personal instance, so theres nothing to gain. You always lose money.

@fluqzy It's an investment!

@stefan
I'm not asking for donations.
It was made for people in my district, but they cling to Meta and prefer Facebook, Instagram and Threads.
All I can do is occasionally advertise it there and continue posting stuff.
I believe for most people Mastodon or the Fediverse is like the Internet in the 90s, largely unknown and for freaks/nerds.
They have a hard time straying aside the norm.
For many people even Facebook is a mystery and they don't know how to properly use it, for instance hide content they don't like seeing.
Discovery with Mastodon is even harder.
And there are those huge instances which don't really have to federate, and I read somewhere that there's a threshold of instances which are even considered for federation, like needs 5 or was it 20 users to even be recognized as a proper instance.
Well, the domain is paid for 1 year, the server is also used as a mail server and has a few WordPress blogs and a gitea instance.
Load average is generally below 0.10 .
And it's paid monthly anyway, might as well give this a try.
256k inhabitants in the district, should even 1% find their way here, I'd count it as a success.
I'd like to provide people with a social network that is not owned by large corporations who sell their user's data and abuse their advertisers.
I would've loved if the officials of my district ran an instance, but they keep ignoring me.
I've invited them to also post what they're already posting on Facebook and Instagram, here.
But they're ignoring me.
I've mailed them asking if I could have a subdomain of goeppingen.de, social.goeppingen.de, but they never responded. Completely ghosted.
So I created this. shrug
I'm already paying 100% of the cost, what more can I do?
Can't force them.

@admin Not easy being a pioneer!

@stefan I guess a weakness of Mastodon in general is being subject to inconsistent rules of the volunteer managers. Indeed, I will become one of them.

But the fact remains - I do not like the policies of this server and I wonder what else I cannot see because of policies that I cannot review. Since I can strike out on my own, that is what I will do.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@twiblr Yes, you are right.

And its strength is that you can easily set up your own community, and still be part of the fediverse. I applaud your decision!

twiblr,
@twiblr@techhub.social avatar

@stefan I haven’t made a contribution, but I plan to leave this server and start my own.

I spun up an experimental instance to host comments for a Music League contest. And now that I know how affordable it is, I plan to go larger for my community.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@twiblr That's awesome, good luck!

@stefan "No I run my own"... But yes, people should toss some coin to their instance admins

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@lieter You can always donate to an admin of another instance! (I run my own, and I've donated.)

lieter,
@lieter@mastodon.lieter.nl avatar

@stefan I had not thought about it that way. I guess I should make a list of which instances I follow the most from....

@stefan more irregular than regular but I try to send some every few months

mark,

@stefan Since I am an admin, does moving money between my own accounts count?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@mark I'd say for the purpose of this poll, no.

When I posted the original poll, I was only able to add four options to polls, and while I can do more now, I wanted to be able to compare the results better.

Maybe I'll run a separate poll later to account for that option.

jake,
@jake@wildarrow.ink avatar

@stefan I would of said “no, not yet” but I’m a single user instance.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@jake You can always support admins of other instances!

4censord,
@4censord@unfug.social avatar

@stefan missing the "i run my own server" option

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@4censord Yes, I wanted to match the options from the original poll to be able to compare the results more accurately.

Still, I run my own server and I donated to an admin of at least one other server.
