I’m watching and reading EE Doc Smith’s Skylark at the same time. And the similarities are striking, even if the timescales are a less realistic in the century old books. @bookstodon

Who has watched the Three Body Problem on Netflix? I think I'm going to start it this weekend. I was extremely skeptical about it because of how badly the producers screwed up Game of Thrones, but heard it's good. Probably because they didn't have to write any original content 😂 I tried the Chinese version, and it's great, but I had a really hard time keeping up with the subtitles.

@Jennifer I enjoyed it, but I'm not telling you anything more, because spoilers lol.

Building a sci-fi asset library.

thisnorthernboy,
@thisnorthernboy@mstdn.social avatar

@nyrath What? I need more than one? FFS.

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@thisnorthernboy

You technically do not need more than one part library.

But practically if the single library has a gazillion parts, it will take a long time to find the parts you need. At some point it will take a shorter time to make the part from scratch, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Any sci-fi trying to do something different gets my attention. Francis Ford Coppola self-financing his story for sure gets my attention.

I'm intrigued.

@virtualbri That trailer looks wild. It's one of those movies that will either magically work or fail in a spectacular and extremely colorful way.

@tsturm Yes, absolutely.

This isn't a novel, but there's a kids picture book called "We Are All Me" by Jordon Crane that explains this in simple poetry at a level that understandable to both children and adults.

The art is incredible. I highly recommend this book, particularly for grown-ups looking to share animism with kids!

@FullyAutomatedRPG Great, thank you! I take anything. I like the point about the interconnectedness of all life.
I'm a little surprised that the idea hasn't been worked on umpteen times in art.

At the space colony, a village of these alien folks live nearby. They're peaceful as long as they're entertained. It's your turn to entertain them. What will you do?

Describe a week in American politic - Stormy Daniels's testimony, dead worm ate my brain, and shoot the puppy and goat affirmation. Hopefully, they appreciate absurdist theatre in the form of performance art. :bl46:

I want a new, excellent space opera series, movie or game preferably.

It's time. I like Star Wars and all, but it's mostly feeling a little played out, with the same plots and even dialogue on repeat.

So yeah, another big, fresh space opera with great lore would really hit the spot.

And don't you dare say "Rebel Moon".

@nyrath @iamgerardthomas There's definitely a really big hump to get over with Blender. Compared to a lot of other design programmes, it seems very unintuitive at first. Once that bridge is crossed though, the basics come pretty fast.

Where Peace Is Lost by Valerie Valdes.

Very different from her series starting with Chilling Effect, Where Peace Is Lost is much more serious. It reads as a quest to save a world, a journey or personal forgiveness, romance, and anti-capitalist philosophy. That's a lot to cram into 12 hours. It's all well done though, not seeming patchwork at all. Thus I zoomed through the story in two days.

Valdes delivers a solid book, perhaps leading us to "the further adventure of..."

Rebeccsa Mozo, the narrator, had a handful of mispronouciations that should have been caught by someone. Not enough to be ruinous, but distracting nonetheless. ☹️ Pronouncing buffet as the noun form, for instance, when it was used as the verb form.

@DejahEntendu @bookstodon I loved Where Peace Is Lost by Valerie Valdes. I've read her previous and they're enjoyable but for me not as gripping as Peace Lost. I very much hope for sequels!

Alien was released in 1979. It is hard to believe that film was made 45 years ago. Some plot details in the movie are still so relevant today. The sci-fi styling, visual aesthetics and music also really hold up.

Weird Science was released in 1985. It would be interesting now due to Generative AI and Stable Diffusion as well as modern robotics.

Just found that the author is now a bsky resident - which explains the complete lack of updates on Mastodon for a while. Boo.

I've tried the brid.gy fed thing but it doesn't appear to pull him though :(
