3Veritasium has done a very good show on .

"The best conditions for skiing are the best conditions for avalanches." is so true.

I used to be an avid skier in my youth. One of my friends owned a private ski resort near Innsbruck Austria. It was wonderful skiing, but they had to do their own ski patrolling. Being the curious person I am, I learned. We always skied with beacons.

Avalanche IV

I captured this sequence starting from the cornice blast to this concluding image.
This final image is one of my favorite from this sequence as it shows some scale to the event.
The lower left is the last groomed run on the edge of the resorts.
This image shows the scale of the event as you can see fully grown pine trees in the lower center of the image. See the full image here: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/avalanche-iv-bill-gallagher.html hy

Avalanche III

This frame shows how the snow starts to spread out after landing in a bowl on the mountain.
If you look at the leading edge of this avalanche you can see that it is not actually rolling down the mountain as you would think. It actually seems to be accelerating underneath the surface layer and blowing the fresh powder upwards. See the full image here: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/avalanche-iii-bill-gallagher.html

Avalanche II

Avalanche II shows the avalanche touching down once again as it moves toward the main traverse and easiest way down the mountain.
Avalanches are a constant threat to skiers in western resorts and the ski patrol does a tremendous job working to keep the public safe.
The speed this traveled was absolutely amazing. See the full image here: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/avalanche-ii-bill-gallagher.html?newartwork=true

Avalanche I

I captured this image on a ski trip out to Snowbird in Utah. The Ski Patrol had been working avalanche patrol since I arrived. On the second day there they had set off a controlled explosion on a large cornice starting this avalanche. I was truly amazed at how quickly the snow came down the hill and the power behind it was just amazing. See the full image here: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/avalanche-i-bill-gallagher.html
