Finished "The Echo of Old Books" by Barbara Davis. I enjoyed the first 2/3rds of it, but soon any such joy succumbed to a growing annoyance with some of the characters, some facets of the plot, a central premise ultimately abandoned, and a sugary predictability that was so obvious I was sure that it would prove a decoy. It was not.
House of Saints starts slowly, dealing mostly with oppressive politics, subterfuge and straining relationships.
It took me a while to get through the first half of the novel.
Things heat up in the second half, and we get to see more cool engineering as our beloved characters try to survive under the oppressive conditions of Venus, the government and the bank.
I finished the second half of the novel in one day.
I especially enjoyed Pascal's continuing transition story, it is nuanced and beautiful.
Note that This is not The Quantum Magician, it is slower, it broods.
A picture book about the most exquisite and extraordinary of winged creatures. The lightest birds in the sky, hummingbirds are capable of incredible feats, such as flying backwards, diving at speeds of sixty-one miles per hour, and beating their wings more than sixty times a second. This book tells the story of a hummingbird’s early life and how they make their way into the world.
Only a few pages in, this is already one of my favorite books of the year. Brilliantly written, an easy read yet so full of crucial perspective. #books#bookstodon#reading#literature#feminism
If your child is a food lover, the ABCs of Indien Cuisine will certainly be a great read. Full of adorable illustrations, this picture book introduces young readers to different Indian dishes, all organized following the alphabet’s letters. From Aloo Gobi to Zeera, young readers discovers twenty six very tasty flavors presented in rich and powerful colors.
From a New York Times bestselling author and a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book honoree, a heartfelt story about taking time to enjoy those you’re with and the world around you.
Just finished another short novel that Benjamin Zephaniah wrote for teenagers. Read two so far. They give an insight into young people's lives for an old sod like me, but more than that, they're just really well constructed, and sensitively and subtlely written. It's not a genre that attracts due credit, but the man excelled in it, clearly. 📖 #books#bookstodon@bookstodon

Rewelacyjna i mądra komedia kryminalna.

Water is what runs out of the kitchen taps or a playground drinking fountain. It fills bathubs and pools and yes, of course, the ocean- but at a certain depth, water becomes a barrier from all you remember, all you think you know.
