On this day, four years ago,
we were told
that in order to fight the virus
we should inject disinfectant
or perhaps sunlight
but those odd suggestions
are from long ago
now on this day, the current one,
we are told
that in order to fight the virus
we should just cross our fingers.
When first I saw the headline
which read “Seriously,
now is the time
to stop kissing sick birds”
I was so certain it was satirical
I was so certain it was fake
that I checked and checked it again
only to be reminded
that satire cannot keep pace
with our current realities.
The Australian saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) was driven to the edge of extinction in the mid-20th century, with an estimated 3,000 individuals left by the 1970s. Now, after decades of protection, they have achieved 'full recovery,' with an estimated 100,000 individual crocodiles in Australia today. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320722002993
