Congrats to Porsche for being the first manufacturer to actually use what can do. I hope that others will follow, it's about time. https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2023/products/porsche-my-porsche-app-provides-new-features-within-apple-carplay-33034.html#ntf

I wish Siri had a long standstill / jam mode where it lets you read and reply to messages directly. Instead of going through the whole "who do you want to send it to / send it or change it" flow.

A video by @danbarbera and @macrumors showing off the new iOS 17 CarPlay features (out now in beta).

I do appreciate these new features, but can’t wait until we have the coming version that integrates all a cars screens! 🍿

Weird thing of late. 8/10 times it disconnects after about a minute, then reconnects. Rinse and repeat. The phone never stops charging so the power is uninterrupted.

Cleaned the charge port, and replaced the cable. No joy. INCREDIBLY annoying.

No idea why, since no major OS updates

Our main family car is eleven years old so lacks CarPlay and Bluetooth media playback. I l get around this through Alexa Auto into the car stereo via aux.

I’ve been looking at these CarPlay / Android Auto standalone units that I could dash mount in front of my BMW’s iDrive display. (There’s no where else to really place it).

I don’t want to invest thousands in a new integrated system. Have you, or someone you know gone this halfway house instead and how did you find it?

Hoping the enhancements will also apply to using for replies to iMessages. Currently Siri is a bit dumb sometimes with punctuation and sentences in general through CarPlay.

Thoughts on Apple's CarPlay

If you have been reading this site for any length of time, it is probably evident that I replace my desktops, laptops, iPads, and iPhones a lot more often than I do my car.

peterlhansen,

@waynedixon With regard to audio Apps, I use TuneIn Radio constantly in place of terrestrial radio. I switch between stations in Florida, Boston, New York, etc independent of my current location. There are a variety of decent radio Apps, and Apple Music isn’t bad for this either. I bought my a year ago and checked that the AM/FM radio worked, but that was the last time.

@jsnell About 10 yrs ago my husband & I rented a car in LA to drive to . It was (ironically) a . They had this awful USB-based iPhone connection where - upon plugin - the dash asked things like: "Copy your contacts list? (Y/N)" and "Should we permanently link USB-phone to this car?"

I unplugged my iPhone and waited 'til the hotel to charge it. 😳

I'll never go back to a car w/o . It's great Ford now refuses to remove CarPlay...👏

Here is the Hard Truth about #automotive software.

If it…

Looks like this; and
Has apps like this; and
Has pop-up notifications like this; and
Has widgets like this; and
Has distracting color palettes like this; and
Has small font sizes like this; and
Entertains people like this…

it is unsafe.

Full stop.

I could care less what consumers want. Consumers cannot appreciate systems safety. Regulators and systems safety experts should be making the calls.

peterlhansen,

@adamjcook In the old days we navigated by looking at street signs and paper maps rather than concentrating on driving. Now we have an easy to see map on the big display and turn directions on the drivers display or HUD. How is this so dangerous? And, who is it that would “disallow” it?

  1. GM dumps CarPlay

  2. GM just hired Apple's former VP of Engineering for Cloud Services, Mike Abbott

"Software, specifically monetizing it, is a major focus for automakers such as GM, as they eye recurring revenue opportunities such as subscriptions to boost profits."

GM is about to replicate Apple's shift to a services-based revenue model.

Subscribe to go faster. 🚗

adamjcook,

@fahrni @jeff @davemark Ha. Indeed. I think has a good consumer approach.

Truth be told, as a systems safety engineer, I am not liking the direction of any car software that is on the market or that will soon be.

Technologies like and have significant driver distraction safety concerns, I am not immediately comfortable with third-party code on safety-critical systems (i.e. app stores) and do not even get me started on 's software and Chinese BEV software.

As and auto get more and more integrated into in-car infotainment and vehicle systems, what are the odds apps are going to start VIN-locking licenses so you have to pay again whenever you get a new car?

jann, to random
@jann@twit.social avatar

Well, pretty sure future GM electric cars will now only start 15 minutes AFTER you press the "start" button, they'll stop at a light ONLY after you turn the car off, and don't even THINK about the same suitcases still being in the trunk 15 minutes after you placed them there...
Well, let's be fair, the suitcases MAY be in the trunk, but don't count on their contents being the same! 😂

We’re shopping for a new car. Tbh, CarPlay is pretty, but both it and similar touchscreen-focused UIs are distracting.

I kinda wish there was a way to keep the useful parts of the UI focused in front of the driver (dashboard, mirror / 360 cameras & HUD stuff) but map the rest of the infotainment API to single-function tactile buttons / dials / triggers etc for everything else. Maybe add haptic feedback?

1/

ajkandy,

obv that would require a permission dialog but that’d be convenient.

For anything that’s not mapped to standard controls, maybe a few programmable tactile buttons / dials with OLED labels or keytop displays, but never for anything critical to driving. 3/

Trying to easily switch iPhones connected to CarPlay on the fly. Mostly for playlist or song selections by anyone in the car, basically the modern day aux cable.

Anyone have tips? I’ve been scouring and can’t seem to find a practical solution to this.

@albumstheapp I listen to music a lot while driving, and I’m grateful for ’s support. But I can’t find a way to tell it to rate a track, either on the CarPlay display or hands-free with , and there doesn’t seem to be a way to do it with .

I like to rate tracks up or down so and can learn to suggest more of what I like.

Focus tries so hard to be smart, but it has failed me in so many subtle ways.

This morning, I had an wake up alarm set at 7 AM and a Calendar event with a time-to-leave set at 7 AM.

At 7 AM, Driving Focus was enabled and the alarm was silenced. Good thing I was already awake.

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@chockenberry I have also noticed Driving Focus sometimes remaining on well after turning off the car (thus disconnecting Bluetooth and ) and going into my house.

To be fair, the settings only say it will activate on connection and do not promise deactivation. 🙄

(The “Automatically” setting is stupid because it also activates when you’re a passenger moving at speed.)

mjgardner,

@jason My car (2016 #Ford C-Max) lacks wireless #CarPlay. I tried using the adapter from https://cplay2air.com but every so often it would fail to connect; plus I still wanted to charge the #iPhone so there’s already a wire involved.

There is nothing about being tied to a car's infotainment system and lack of choice will be "as compelling" as Apple , GM!

GM CFO Says Its Software Will at Least Be 'Equally as Compelling' as CarPlay

GM on dumping CarPlay:

"If we're going to take that feature out of our vehicles, we need to respond with a program and a customer package that is equally as compelling, if not more compelling. We think with the partnership we have with Google and ultimately with the vehicle data we have, we can create an experience that customers are going to love."

Without Apple on board, GM simply can't replicate the tight integration of CarPlay.

Yeesh. 😐
