It's very sad ... the majority of the worlds climate experts see disaster looming, a significant minority of citizens in Europe and the US can see what's happening and yet ... from our political, commercial and industrial leaders ... weasel words and no urgent action #ClimateDiary
Driving ever heavier vehicles on
surfaces derived from the bottom
of the oil refinery stack.
Surfaces dependent on
governments hell bent
on austerity.
Hmm.
Or…
We could
mandate that
vehicles are as light
as possible to eke out
the irreplaceable fossil jackpot
while we figure out how not to use it.

"Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck."
People here read things like "mass migration" and only picture people from Africa, the Middle East and further afield, coming to Europe.
What people here aren't yet considering is how soon they themselves could be forced to collect as much as they can carry, and leave their homes to find higher ground.
#ClimateDiary Guardian alert popped up on my phone just now with this…. 💔
‘Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with famines, conflicts and mass migration, driven by heatwaves, wildfires, floods and storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.’
“ the world's oceans have broken temperature records every single day over the past year - BBC analysis finds “
“ ~47 days smashed the record for that day of the year by at least 0.3C (BBC analysis of Copernicus data).
Never before in the satellite era had the margin of record been this big “
" almost a month ahead in the sea surface temperature in the Atlantic “

The destruction of the planet isn't a mistake, isn't a misunderstanding, isn't an accident. It's largely a deliberate process driven by economics and the material reality of the society we live in. Everything that we produce and consume in an industrial civilization is dependent upon the destruction of the planet.

Just over a year ago, on Twitter, I encountered a launch presentation from electric flight folks, Maeve Aerospace. Here’s what I wrote at the time 🧵
Let me know what I got wrong, or what’s changed since.
There is a possible long term future for aviation of certain kinds…
IF
we don’t create the conditions for the collapse of resilient high energy civilisation.
Listened to a couple of discussions about the shape of capitalist retreat:
With a theoretical emphasis, the Macrodose conversation between Raj Patel, Jason W Moore and James Meadway (host) https://overcast.fm/+8dw-Ulyv4
Doomer Optimism, James Pogue and Chris Mott with an ‘on-the-ground’ emphasis on the Sahel, especially Mauritania and the Central African Republic (CAR). What happened when France left and Wagner Group Russians (among others) moved in https://overcast.fm/+zkMNOM2Qc
#ClimateDiary Hugely important and heartening interpretation of yesterday’s local elections:
Rishi Sunak's decision to row back on a number of decarbonisation policies has "done less than nothing for his chances of re-election", according to campaigners who today argued the local election results demonstrated how moves by the government to weaken UK climate efforts had been roundly rejected by voters.
Answer: it looks more and more likely. There are still uncertainties, especially as to “When”; but with ever increasing evidence it is clear, as Rahmstorf says: we must, must apply the #precautionaryprinciple.
During sobering conclusion a pop-up message about Taylor Swift. What a time to be alive.
