I'm still working out how to use #ContentWarnings on Mastodon in a way that feels right for me. My writing – even the erotica I've had published in anthologies – has always used content notes and trigger warnings, because I know how vital they are to me keeping myself safe.
At the same time, it feels strange to add a content to every toot about politics, or my writing that is more sex education-y than explicit, or my newsletter that already starts with specific content notes for each essay.
:mastodon: Something I wish Mastodon did with CWs that Tumblr does better… Tumblr allows you to tag the type of content so viewers can opt-in or out of each category.
I mentioned this on my other Mastodon account, but didn't get any comments—I've noticed that images that I put behind #ContentWarnings on #PixelFed are obscured on PixelFed but are still plainly visible on #Mastodon. Is there anything that can be done about that? Do the two just handle content warnings differently? Is there a workaround? I'm talking about when viewing both in a Web browser on a desktop computer.
#FunFact
On #Tusky (and probably other apps) images in posts with content warnings still show up by default unless the image itself is marked as sensitive or "adult" content.
Tusky (and other apps) should fix that, but users should be aware of that and plan accordingly.
Yeah, #Bluesky, land of the free where you're not bullied into posting alt text or hashtags or content warnings. <sarcasm> :blobfoxterrified:
It's getting pretty annoying that people pose in their sailor moon underwear and don't put #ContentWarnings or nsfw hashtags, nothing. Trying to make a clean feed and adding all the nsfw filters, and people still leak thru.
I said it before but I wish Mastodon would let you pick categories for #contentWarnings instead of just making up your own. Then I could say, for instance, "auto expand anything about US politics" but not "auto expand graphic sex work photos"
To all those folks on Mastodon complaining that American news stories such the air out of the place and any US news story needs to be labeled with a CW:
Good luck seeking to live in a protected bubble in which what happens in the US doesn't affect you outside the US.
Britain tried that approach with Brexit, vis-a-vis Europe. How's that working out?
It is somewhat funny that after a constant refrain of #Fediverse newbies being bullied for not using #contentwarnings, it appears from my feed anyway that nobody is using them anymore.
It’s not surprising because while the intent is good, in practice it falls down. First because it’s impossible to actually warn people of all possible things that might remind them of trauma. Second because the data we have on content warnings suggests they don’t really work to reduce that stress.
It’s an interesting example of the social norms on the service evolving as new users come on and older users adopt their behavior.
Is it just me, or are there suddenly a lot more public posts flying around without appropriate content warnings (or subject lines, if you prefer)?
Right now, there’s a lot of stuff I don’t want to have to read, because I don’t have the capacity at the moment
But it would be nice to be able to stay in touch with people rather than having to take a complete break from social media as in the bad old days of Twitter
to add a cw to an existing post written by somebody else is both intriguing and new - so i am not surprised about confusion regarding this concept ❤️ #cw#contentwarnings#hajkey#fediverse
I appreciate the need for people to use #contentwarnings, but as someone who defers to science, I'm likely not going to be someone who uses it very often.
Seriously, people, when talking about politics could we normalize "content warnings" under a hashtag mentioning what country this is about?
It'd make everyone's life on the Fediverse so much better.
I hate telling people what to put #ContentWarnings on but may I please suggest that if you toot about the #TrumpVerdict, specifically regarding details about why the jury said yes to one charge but no to another, please put a #ContentWarning on it.
