Attacks by the Rapid Support Forces #RSF and allied militias in El Geneina, capital of Sudan’s West Darfur state, killed at least thousands of people and left hundreds of thousands as #refugees
The US ambassador to the United Nations on Monday warned of an impending "large-scale massacre" in the Sudanese city of El-Fasher, a humanitarian hub in the Darfur region.
Today marks one year since renewed fighting began between the Sudanese Armed Forces and a rebel paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces. More than 14,000 people have been killed and more than 8 million refugees have fled since April 15, 2023, according to estimates, but the death toll could be much higher. NPR has more about the brutal war and Russia’s involvement.
This comes after the Governor of the region announced a new route to deliver humanitarian aid to the western territory. The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary RSF has left 18 million people – more than a third of the population – facing acute food insecurity.
Chad, one of the world’s five poorest countries, now has more refugees [from Darfur] per head than anywhere else in Africa. Numbers tick upwards by the minute. As need escalates, help has melted away.
The World Food Programme needs $242m to support Chad over the next 6 months. As of 13 March, it had not received a penny. Denied support, the humanitarian response is equivalent to battling a raging inferno as the water hoses run dry.

Denying the crimes of rape and sexual abuse committed extensively by the Rapid Support militia in #Khartoum, Wad #Madani and #Darfur, and trying to normalize them and turn them into mere political bidding in the current market of political decadence by the herd of the Forces of Freedom and Change does not help in reaching a settlement of the conflict in #Sudan.
