Take some time to read the story and watch the video about Chicago Park Elementary School's Farm. It's a great project for the students and the whole community, thanks to Principal Katie Kohler and Sierra Harvest School Garden Educator Lauren Valentino. If you're so inclined, take a look at the wishlist, including the need for helping hands. We'll return to the farm later this year to bring you an update, but it's already looking great! #eatlocal#schoolfarm
Hi! I'm (probably) Ember (trying it out). I also go by Zemri.
#Agender. They/them and neutral terms only unless otherwise indicated. #masc leaning in physical presentation. Been on T for almost 5 months now. Mostly just goblin mode at all times.
Obviously it helps to have the resources to access land and work it-- but just have a look at what's possible in one yard.
The before/after shots are stunning. This was a bare trash dump 30 years ago.
Two acres, turned into a veritable jungle. Planted and maintained by two people. And if those two people disappeared and the land was left to itself, it wouldn't slow down. In another hundred years its trees will still tower over the neighborhood, and a person could still wade in there and find something to eat.
Today, the effects of this work already extend far beyond the property itself.
Here's an update from the same property, 5 years later.
This one household has grown connections to people all over the world. Inspiration flows out, support flows in.
Nearby towns are linking together to distribute their produce-- supporting the local economy, reducing their dependence on unsustainable supply chains, meeting their neighbors, and building community.
The starfruit is loaded with young green #fruit right now. Another month or so and it's on. #eatlocal
This tree seems to only fruit every 2nd year, at least for as long as I've been checking it. My favorite way to preserve starfruit is dried.
The green fruit are hard to see at first, they look like leaves, then when you finally see one, you see that the tree is LOADED.
Let's admire these variegated bananas for a minute. One of the rarest bananas you'll see on Hawai'i Island and they are BEAUTIFUL. A cooking banana, for savory preparations, I'll let you know how they taste after I cook them. #EatLocal#Plants#tropics#FoodForest#fruit#hawaii
I decided to make monkey butter. Fe'i bananas, juice of one pink eureka lemon, pulp of one large lilikoi (passion fruit), shredded coconut, a dollop of coconut oil, sugar and enough maple syrup to leave a hint. Cooked until desired consistency. Jar it up, keep in fridge or freezer. 🤤 It tastes like a roll of tropical fruit lifesavers. 😆 #eatlocal#farmToFace#cooking#sweets#EatDessertFirst#homesteady
