I'm picky when it comes to fruits, which is a tragedy considering the many varieties in this tropical country where I live. My usual faves are ripe mangoes and pineapple. That's why I'm so glad to discover my love for mangosteen, which now makes it to my top three faves. 🥰

How about you? What's your top three fave fruits?

The pounding rain woke me up. It's calmer now, so I might find a little window to get out there this am and feed everybody before it starts again, but Maui getting the shit kicked out of them. Y'all hunker down!

Radar map from big island to Oahu, you can barely see Molokai and you cannot see Maui or Lanai at all because of heavy rain.

The third coat of is applied to my studio desk (in ) despite levels between 88% and 98%. The hardest part is the sanding in between, because the paint does not dry completely even after days in these conditions.

Another rack of cuban red bananas. A few of them split, bc of the amount of rain we got after a "dry" spell, so started ripening a bit too fast. I cut them down before the rats found them. Look closely, you can see a couple split, but also a "conjoined twin" banana. Almost all of my Cavendish variety racks have one. They are all clones, so it makes sense they'd all have similar rack patterns.

Green red orange yellow rack of bananas.

in the Atlantic and in the Pacific are two very different storms but will hopefully offer modest impacts to the areas they threaten. Still, interests in the Caribbean (Tammy) and Baja (Norma) should monitor these storms.

Details: https://theeyewall.com/october-19-2023-outlook-tammy-toys-with-the-caribbean-islands-while-norma-rapidly-intensified-overnight-in-the-pacific/

The track of Hurricane Norma should take it close to Baja this weekend, likely as a much weaker storm.

Invest 94L in the Atlantic is at a 90% chance of formation within the next 7 days and a 70% chance of formation in the next 48 hours.

From the models, there's a northward trend among most of them. It's just a matter of when that happens.

That can always change, and if it does I'll be keeping an eye on it from here on out.

Berkeley Earth's August 2023 Temperature Update

By far the warmest August since direct measurements began.

Warmest for both land & ocean.

Strengthening El Niño.

Nearly certain 2023 becomes the warmest year directly measured.

May see a +1.5 °C annual excess in 2023.

https://berkeleyearth.org/august-2023-temperature-update/

RARohde,
@RARohde@fediscience.org avatar

During August, record warmth was particularly prominent in the tropics, as well parts of the Pacific and the North Atlantic.

13% of the Earth's surface was locally record warm in August, and 65 countries (mostly in the tropics) set new national-average records for August.

None of the Earth had a record cold monthly average in August (though a few parts of Antarctica were close).
