I'm not saying "drill a hole through your #Baofeng" but what I am saying is, I widened the mic hole with a tiny hand drill and my voice does not sound nearly so muffled... if you do this, you could drill through your mic... which would not be good... also dust and things... and no more warranty... on your Baofeng #UV5r etc
Edit: Actually, I did this to two Baofengs and both sound better on the other end now... wind and plosives are an issue... but I side-mic anyway
The old boat wouldn't start. I'm attempting the 2 miles to the access by trolling motor. Ironic, since trolling motor power was how i got it into dock last spring when it ran out of gas.
I hope the batteries have a full charge.
I posted this screenshot from Terminator 2 a few years ago, and it seems even more true today: you should be preparing kids for an uncertain future (not the blowing things up and weapons, but disaster preparedness and survival skills). "Here's how to perfect your golf game" isn't gonna do it. #DisasterPreparedness#Terminator#SkynetDay
I'm Ted, KC0URT (amateur) and WRNU773 (GMRS). I am active in our local radio club and ARES organization. I am just learning Mastodon after never learning any related apps - clueless about hashtags and @s. #introduction#hamradio#amateurradio#digitalhamradio#ARES#gmrs
@tiamat271@ai6yr Technically GMRS requires a license. The fee for the license is $35, but there is no test- just apply and pay online. The license is valid for 10 years and covers your entire family. FRS does not require anything but purchasing radios, but supposedly doesn’t have as much distance as GMRS (and distance could be increased if you are near GMRS repeaters.) Radio questions always seem to be a can of worms!😉 #GMRS#FRS#Radios
I finally got my #rtlsdr dongle set up, kinda... I was playing with it and my walkie-talkie, and with some odd adjustments, it works!
Two oddities:
The waterfall and spectrum look a bit strange. I'm used to the WebSDR at UTwente (you know the one), and it doesn't make sense compared to that.
I was testing the channel barriers between 20 and 21, and I caught what sounded like morse code on channel 20. I did not record it so I could not decode it...!
@blake I heard the morse code on my walkie-talkie this time; it was just sitting on channel 20 listening, while I was listening to the news on FM radio with my SDR. I assume it's probably a #GMRS transmitter somewhere, and it seemed longer this time, but I didn't switch back or turn on the recorder fast enough to catch it. 18:04 was the time on my screen when I looked up. I wonder if it's broadcast on a timer; nobody's responding to me on the channel.
For those of you who have never met me....... I work in Emergency Management, Public Safety, Disaster Preparedness, and Business Continuity. I am a Hazmatician. Amateur Radio: N3FUD (@n3fud)

Oh, and I'm the admin of fediverse.krohsnest.com and bots.krohsnest.com

I got some Onn brand walkie talkies intending to use them in the mountains (which we did!). I'm learning all about how they work, including the privacy codes. Now I'm falling down the rabbit hole of #FRS (low power walkies like the ones I have) and #GMRS, and #CB and #HamRadio are on my radar now...
@AMG8697 when you’re at the FCC I politely like to ask to change the rule that prohibits someone that has a HAM and GMRS license from using the same radio to communicate in both services. Requiring 2+ radios creates unnecessary e-waste + complexity. Thx for your consideration. #ham#hamRadio#gmrs#gmrsRadio#fcc
@thenewoil In light of last week's DHS threat assessment highlighting ongoing threats to the power grid, I still argue it is wise for everyone to consider #radio capabilities, especially #GMRS (because it's cheap and easy) and #AmateurRadio (because it's so much more capable in an infrastructure emergency).
Congress might get sat phones but how will you communicate?
If anyone is looking for an instance that caters to #EmergencyManagement#PublicSafety#HamRadio or #GMRS, fediverse.krohsnest.com is open. Registration needs approval, but if you list what agency you are with and what position you hold (for Emergency Management and Public Safety), or your callsign (For Ham Radio or GMRS), I'll get your registration approved as quickly as possible.
