A day for dramatic skies and dodging showers at the today!

Got the last row of potatoes in and earthed up the first, which have just come through. Other than that, weeding, weeding, weeding…

Very puffy white clouds with patches of blue sky above sheds and greenhouses with leafy fruit bushes in the foreground

I have gardened.

Tomatoes and strawberry spinach repotted, basil and spring onions sown. Bit of general maintenance. I was tired before I started, owing to the lack of sleep, and now I'm especially tired.

After spending nearly 20 years in an apartment, being in a house with a yard is so weird. Like, how do you actually plant things in the ground? I get how to use pots and window boxes and raised beds, but like… in the shitty dirt in my front yard? Am I supposed to use potting soil? Fertilizer? Just stick the plant in the ground and hope?

stevesplace,

@pseudonymsupreme Videos on YouTube are your friend. And, yes. You have to prepare the soil. I had to rototill my parents' yard for lawn and help create flower beds. It's seasonal and never-ending. You need to weed. Gardens are work to get started, and once started, need attention or bugs and weeds will take care of your pretty plants, lol.

Sunscreen is your friend. Also good gloves and a sun hat. Get shoes for the garden only. Talk to a local nursery about soil prep. Very helpful. Slow is okay

pseudonymsupreme,

@stevesplace Thanks! I put in a couple ground covers so we’ll see how they do and I’ll take it from there.

characias ssp wulfenii, Wulfen's . This grows all over Vancouver - it's drought tolerant, evergreen, and rugged. The flowers smell like rotting meat to attract flies, as here.

Alt: 3 views of the flower clusters, large groups of dramatic yellow-green against cool blue-green foliage. Each floret has three tiny buds that open, sequentially, into acid-yellow flowers.

most of my efforts go towards veggies & chestnut seedlings, but my front yard is directly adjacent to the primary car traffic artery in the area for the last 50 years, making me reluctant to grow food there. So instead I am going all out with tulips & mostly perennial flowers, and it is a JOY. I am missing the main tulip season this year because I am in Berlin, but my partner sent me a tulip report today, and just look at my babies they are so pretty! SO PRETTY! I mean look!

@playinprogress Super pretty! Ich hab überall im Waldgarten Wildtulpen verteilt und freu mich auch jedes mal, wenn ich eine Blüte entdecke.

Sam [14] shows us how to earth up potatoes. We do to prevent the sunlight from hitting the tubers, because the tubers will go green if that happens and then they are poisonous.

The abundance of this tiny plot is rather satisfying with the lettuce and brassicas grateful for the fence's shade. We get 2-3 rotating crops a year. Just sprinkled some egg shells and planted the last of the winter/spring seedlings. Summer is on the horizon.
