This week's project is an game in . There are a few design considerations given that I'm looking at a Saturday release:

  • Simple framework. Story window, choices, maybe some low-res illustrative pixel art.
  • Short enough that saves aren't a requirement if I don't have time to figure out how to code that
  • Short enough to write and implement in a few days' time

The story scoping will be the trickiest part. I've written shorts, but I'm a novelist.

@pidgeon_pete is a scripting language developed by @inklestudios for the creation of branching narratives - either in text-based games or more graphical ones that use dialog trees/etc.

You can use it with many engines, like or but you'll need an interpreter to fit them together.

I've been looking into interpreters for Godot 4 so this week's project is going to be a choice-based text adventure. Today I'll be brainstorming, tomorrow I'll build a framework/interpreter, and the rest of the week will be writing the game.

I'll be going for something relatively bare-bones in presentation, but if I get a good feel for it will be able to integrate Ink into future game projects as well.

Got the new tileset working with the auto-tiling script. :)

This version's geometry is much simpler, so it'll make building some specific shapes much easier.

Now, gonna make use of the migration to refractor all the movement and attacking code!
That should be fun lol

Thought I'd share a bit more about the sneak peek video posted a few days ago. The primary new feature being showcased is ranged combat within the free movement system! The upcoming release will support hitscan weapons, with projectile weapons coming later. (1/2)

: Today's the last day of polish for this week's game, in which you are a ghost trying to scare children out of your haunted mansion before an evil teddy-bear murders them.

Came up with some music that I like for the core game and intermission scenes, wrapped up the title, tweaked the floor tiles a little.

There's more I could do but the point is to spend exactly one week on each of these, so it's time to wrap it up.

Game Devlog 01 - Yesterday I restarted my project. I liked where things were headed before I took a break, but I think a reset will help me focus. Using , I’m writing out deliverables and tasks and I’m about 20% done preparing for development on the first minor version. It feels a little tedious and I may scale back in the future, but I want to see if the structure will help with this first minor version.

Game Devlog 07 - I added a randomization to the walls between tiles that cross the map. It was difficult to find a method that would allow for strategy, while also limiting the movement of player and enemies. Here are some screenshots of different trials, the last one is the current version.

randomization #2, not nearly as many lines, but its way too open, still not interesting enough
randomization 3 - this looks way better, but functions more like a maze than a dungeon or room. It needs more open space to move and strategize
randomization 4 - this method has a lot more open space, but still offers an outlet for strategy
