From the climate impact alone, I wouldn’t touch Bitcoin with a bargepole .

“Bitcoin alone is estimated to consume 127 terawatt-hours (TWh) a year — more than many countries, including Norway. In the United States, cryptocurrency activity is estimated to emit from 25 to 50 million tons of CO2 each year, on par with the annual emissions from diesel fuel used by US railroads.”

My single biggest gripe about neurotypical people is the profound reluctance that so many of them have towards learning about neurodiversity, autism in particular. Most cannot be bothered to read one Wikipedia article about us, even knowing that one of their acquaintances is autistic and needs them to understand.

I am not trans, but I take the time to learn about trans people, from trans people, so I can better understand the unique difficulties they face. I also do the same for races other than my own, genders other than my own, nationalities other than my own, religions other than my own, neurotypes other than my own, disabilities other than my own, etc. If one disabled, exhausted, and socially encumbered person can find the time to actively learn about and from all these groups, then I can say with confidence that it is not too much to ask the same from a neurotypical person regarding just one. But when I ask for it, I only get excuses and conversational redirections.

It's a damning indictment of the selfishness of Western society that despite living in a pandemic that has killed tens of millions of people, we haven't even learned to normalize wearing a mask or staying home when we are sick, regardless of what bug you might have.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/12/a-cold-a-super-cold-or-covid-should-i-carry-on-regardless

The rules of illness changed after Covid: previously there was an expectation that you would take your rhinovirus all round town until you dropped dead, and if you happened to give it to anyone, they would appreciate you even more, because now they would know how rubbish you felt. While the pandemic delivered nothing of the large-scale social revolution many of us hoped for at the start, it did at least ram home this trace of wisdom: maybe just stay in bed if you are not well? However, like all social corrections, it has turned into an over correction, so now it’s plague rules: if you want to go anywhere with a runny nose, you first have to assure everyone that it’s not Covid. This is quite a dark art, since lateral flow tests are a bit patchy and sometimes notice the disease only once it is on the way out of your body. You have to make it work with the force of your conviction: “I promise it’s not Covid.” Then you have to square off all the other modern respiratory infections – “I don’t believe it to be ‘white lung’ pneumonia”; “I’m pretty sure it’s not a super cold” – before the broad spectrum assurance that by now will not be believed: “I was fine when I left the house!” Followed by, pointlessly: “This is 100% true.”

@luckytran nodds in agreement

I think this convinced me that society is fecked up and that not only are we ruled by , but their gets normalized to the point that not being a selfish is being penalized instead of being taken for granted.

we are never going back to the world the way it was before COVID. we are not in a world where it's safe for you or people around you to stop masking, and there's no reason to believe we'll ever be in such a world again.

2023 represents a qualitative jump in all climate indicators, and the consequences we see—the wildfires, the heatwaves, the droughs, the floods etc.—will not stop. they will only accelerate.

there is no return to "normal". mourn the world that was, so that you can see with clarity the world that is, and be ready for it.

The Antarctic sea extent anomaly chart. Every year on record stays above -5%. 2023 so far has dropped sharply below -15%. This is significant not just for sea life but because the ice reflects sun heat more than water. The more the ice melts, the worse global heating gets.
Canada area burned by province, and total, 2023 vs. the average of the last 10 years. The average total is 2505 thousand hectares per year. 2023 so far burned 15407 thousand hectares.

@ramonita that's because we're ruled by antisocial that take pride in comitting by inaction and refusing to enforce basic, fact-based quarantine regulations.

We could've gotten rid of this shit if we took it as serious as said infection it really is.

Instead assholed destroyed the few pandemic and epidemic protections that were codified.

And I've completely run out of spoons at this point!

Bike commute story:

On my way back home tonight, a car was parked in the cycle lane. I rang my bell as I passed it and saw a lady on her phone sitting in the driver seat.
I said "This is a bike lane, you can't park here"
She ignored me.
I stopped in front of her car and took my phone out, snapped a picture of her car.
She immediately drove away.
I did too.
3 minutes later she appeared next to me, slowed down to my speed and yelled "why did you take my photo?"

It's been over 30 years since the first major UN report on the dangers of climate change. Many scientists knew what was happening even before then, and had warned governments and corporations about the risks of continuing with Business As Usual.

And what was the response?

Not only was there no serious attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — "No, sorry, we can't do that" — instead our so-called leaders doubled down, greatly increasing their use of fossil fuels!

Global greenhouse gas emissions have reached a record high amid an unparalleled acceleration in global warming, according to a new study.

From 2013 to 2022, “human-induced warming has been increasing at an unprecedented rate of more than 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade,” fifty top scientists warned on Thursday in a sweeping climate science update.

The findings would appear to close the door on capping global warming under the 2015 Paris Agreement’s ambitious 1.5C target, long identified as a guard rail for a relatively climate-safe world, albeit one still roiled by severe impacts.

Crass Americans with too much money are moneywanking in front of a scientist, assuming that their impressive money will convince him to perform in a debate with barbarians. They believe that everyone else must love their big swinging money as much as they do, because it’s so big and money, they can’t understand that the scientist may have other motivations.

Why can’t they just send unsolicited dick pics like normal men?

One, it's just a cheap shaded-pole motor, and you don't want it.

And two, that manufacturer is lying to you and you shouldn't trust them with your money, on this product or any other, even if that other product hasn't been pumped up as something it isn't by the in .
