#VeteransDay followup: I was looking at some of the info of my great-uncle and every time I see this man's face I want to be that cool someday. My grandmother loved him deeply, and spoke of him fondly. She was one of the most amazing people I knew, so I'm betting he was pretty awesome too. I wish I could have met him.
“Your Soldier and Mine” — article from Screen Stars magazine, June 1944
“It is our proud privilege to present Ida Lupino's own story, written especially for you. This fine actress dwells on a subject closest to her heart—and yours—our soldiers. It will awaken you anew to the debt and deep gratitude we owe these wonderful boys.”
"In Operation Desert Rock, the military conducted a series of nuclear tests in the Nevada Proving Grounds between 1951 and 1957. In total, more nearly 400,000 American soldiers and civilians would be classified as 'atomic veterans.'"
Remembering US Air Force Captain Lillian Kinkella Keil on Veteran’s Day. She served as flight nurse in World War II and Korea and is one of the most decorated women in American military history.
Captain Kinkella Keil's daughter narrates her story for AMERICAN EXPERIENCE.
A while ago I started coming up with resolutions on #VeteransDay instead of New Year's. They feel more important and meaningful to me. Also I feel better mentally with a forward view instead of always looking back. Highly recommend to other military veterans.
I had dinner with a group of Paralympians and veteran athletes this week. Today I got in a long run to think. 10 years ago I was 40 pounds overweight and learning to be a college student with PTSD. At 40 yrs old I ran my first marathon.
@Smootasaurus "resolutions on #VeteransDay instead of New Year's", what a most excellent idea. it took a heart scare in my 60s to get me to clean up my diet act & get to a reasonable weight, so it makes me smile to see someone learning those lessons earlier & acting smarter younger.
Happy Veterans Day, glad you are taking care of yourself. Go Green Machine.
My great uncle, a WWII vet, passed away a few years ago. He never talked about the war, but after he died, an extraordinary story resurfaced.
While gathering info for the obituary, my aunt came across some old newspaper clippings.
In 1945, as Allied forces closed in on Berlin, Hitler committed suicide, and the people who took his spot attempted to arrange a surrender to non-Russian forces (they wanted to keep fighting the Russians), which was rejected.
After realizing their only other option was total destruction at the hands of the Russians, Germany signaled that they were prepared to unconditionally surrender to Allied forces.
A call was made to Allied headquarters in London, and they in turn made a call to allied forces in mainland Europe to inform them that Germany had surrendered.
My great uncle was the guy who answered that call.
Never forget the sacrifices our ancestors made fighting fascism. Tell their stories.
It's obvious to me that a second #Trump presidency would destroy American #democracy - which is, at the moment, on shaky ground. We are in the throes of a global battle against #authoritarianism and #fascism, and each of us must actively choose the path we want for ourselves and future generations.
📌📌 I'll be posting relevant links in this ongoing Democracy Thread. >>
1/3 (Morning Joe, 11/13/23) Over #VeteransDay weekend, in both social media posts and at a #rally, Trump vowed to "root out the communists, marxists, fascists, and radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country," and goes on to say that "the threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave than the threat from within."
As many observe yet another #VeteransDay, instead of thanking me for my service in words, please thank me for my service by standing with me to create peace in the world.
