“Everything changed with streaming and everybody needs to be compensated for their work. It’s fucking easy. I don’t get it.” Amanda Seyfried at the #MetGala on the possible #WGA#strike. Standing with her #union colleagues. #UnionStrong#MayDay
Today is a good day to remember the IWW’s "Little Red Songbook: To Fan the Flames of Discontent," a collection of 52 songs about unionizing and workers’ rights. This edition, published 100 years ago, was reprinted in 2014 by PM Press.
May 1, is #MayDay, aka #InternationalWorkersDay, a day celebrated by those who work for a living around the globe. However, the US does not officially recognize International Workers' Day. Why not?
This year The Met Gala and International Workers Day aka #mayday, are happening on the same day. While I doubt many in the fediverse care much about couture—the overlap to me is important, but I'm sad will likely be noted.
Lagerfeld was brilliant—but this #mayday I ask folks to make an effort to look at the Gala's outfits. To study the craft of each garment's beading, their tailoring, their sculpture in fabric, the milnery of accompanying headwear,. The fabulous shoes. And to see the hundreds of invisible craftspeople whose years-long dedication to one specific craft, made the execution of each outfit, possible.
Even if you could care less about fashion—the dedication to craft and exquisite artistry showcased in haute couture, needs to be witnessed. To be honored. It is second to none. See the atelier craftspeople, the stylists, the hairdressers, the makeup artists, and the assistants. Tip your hat to them, this #mayday
Even just the draping, pattern design, machete making, cutting, hand sewing, and fitting "clean" dresses such as LaLa Anthony's, take a village of anonymous craftspeople. No AI anything will ever touch their craft. Happy #MayDay!
Union membership was already on the decline when Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, but it deteriorated further during his tenure, allowing employers to wring higher productivity from workers whose wages began to stagnate.
Taking the torch from WardQNormal on the [#Birdsite, my hobby is taking graphs of economic data over time and indicating the year that Ronald Reagan was inaugurated, just in case people find that helpful or informative.]
Some May Day humor for you courtesy of Frankie Boyle -
“One of the reasons middle class people don’t understand the working class is that they often lie to them during job interviews
When they’re asked,
“Where do you see yourself ideally in five years time?”
They rarely reply,
“Standing in the ruins of this building pissing on your burning skull.”.

"May Day, celebrated by workers across the globe as #InternationalLaborDay, falls on May 1.
But you'd be forgiven if that's news to you. While the day traces its origins to an American laborers' fight for a shorter work day, the US does not officially recognize International Labor Day...
