š PowerPC 40x Processor Support To Be Dropped From The Linux Kernel
ā @phoronix
"Back in 2020 was a proposal for dropping PowerPC 40x support from the Linux kernel given that the code was orphaned for a long time with no apparent users. The PowerPC 40x processors were found in thin clients, set-top boxes, and other devices during the 90's. Finally now it looks like that the PowerPC 40x removal is set to happen"
I did discover that three clips that hold the front broke off already, need to glue them back at a later date, but the 8100 is mostly restored and quieter now as it only runs off the BlueSCSI, the HD is disconnected, but causes a slight about 10 sec delay when it cold boots.
@chikorita157 I always liked SCSI for some odd reason. Canāt claim any kind of magical superiority in it, and itās always been a bit fidgety. But sometimes we like imperfect things for some reason :)
Double irony is that I donāt own any SCSI machines :)
@yon I have like two SCSI devices, a ZIP drive and an external hard drive. Basically, itās like Thunderbolt back in the day, surprised there was an external SCSI video card.
Sure, the whole Performa 6200 and the 630 being terrible because it uses an IDE HD instead of SCSI is a thing, although it can use CF cards without using a BlueSCSI. However, one canāt beat the connivence of dropping files on the SD card that the BlueSCSI uses and not having to deal with ISO mounting programs or physical CDs.
Should try to pick up a beige Mac of any type some time. They can do some things that the newer Power Macs canāt do such as play games that require BW/4/16 colours or greys.
The G3 Accelerator Upgrade for the Power Macintosh 8100. It should speed things up considerably as the 601, while fast back in 1994 eventually got outpaced by the 604 and eventually the G3.Wait, you can upgrade CPUs? Yes, you can with these accelerator cards, something you can't do with modern Macs.
Sure, the Power Macintosh G3 are faster, but it can't run Mac OS 7. Adding this will make it a fast Mac that can run it.
Finally cleaned the corner of my desk, which has the vintage computer corner of the desk, which consists of a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Door from 2022, a Macintosh 8100/100AV, to run older Mac OS games that won't run on Mac OS 9 or run too fast, and a custom Wintel (eww) Pentium III games to run older PC games.
The 8100 restoration is in it's early stages. I have a Wombat ADB to USB adapter to allow the use of a USB KVM switch, which allow me to switch between these three vintage computers seamlessly and switch the source on the monitor. The 8100 now sports an external BlueSCSI to boot from flash media with an AAUI Ethernet adapter to get new software over the network. There is no need to burn discs or use floppy disks to get software on there.
I'm not complete with the 8100 yet, Need to repair some stuff, upgrade it to a Newer Tech G3 Accelerator, and probably max out the RAM.
The custom Pentium III machine is not plugged in yet, need a DVI to HDMI adapter or DVI to Displayport adapter, but it will happen in the future.
I'm using a Sabrent USB peripheral sharing switch to share the keyboard and mouse between all three computers.
@yon@tobleh No problem. I have the same exact keyboard (the top one). Itās nothing special, but I bought it in 2016 since the keyboards that came with the Performa was long gone.
The ADB Wombat didnāt came until a few years later, which is what I decided to go with, so I can switch between computers using the same keyboard and mouse.
I finally got the Power Macintosh 8100 and it's apparently its the more expensive 100/AV model, which allows you to connect to S-Video and input/output RCA Audio. _The computer is surprisingly in good condition and I didnāt pay too much for it (around $100 not including shipping). The only thing is the CD cover is loose, but I can probably 3D print a new one or if the plastic bits might be in the computer, glue it back.
I still need to open it up to remove the battery.
Can't do much with it since I don't have the BlueSCSI yet and I don't have any blank CD-Rs to reinstall the OS.
Need to get an AAUI Ethernet adapter and a few more things to make it operational.
@yon@Linux I think there is a good number on Macintosh Garden. Also, Bandai Pippin (Appleās failed game console) games will work on a PowerPC Mac since it's basically a stripped down Mac that can run games, exclusively.
Also, Mac OS 9 Macs had so many killer features like:
Multiple Accounts
Voice Login
Themes
Keychain
PlainTalk
File sharing
USB Audio and printer sharing
Dual boot into 9 (Classic) and X.
Up to a G4 processor
@Luke This was the OS I used on my first Mac, the Titanium G4 Powerbook. I worked in IT for a school system and used Mac OS X 10.0 server and a program called Mac Manager on a network of OS 9 machines, mostly the original G3 iMacs.
@Rairii I see only one FAT16 partition on the disk in this machine. This partition contains OSLoader, HAL, two versions of Veneer, and a bunch of HTML files that a student who previously used this must have accidentally saved there instead of on the NTFS volume. I was able to get manual booting working with one version of Veneer on disk but not the other. Both versions appear to differ from the one that's on the retail CD I have. Oddly, while the FAT16 partition is primary, the NTFS partition is extended.
When I have time later, I can dig through the drivers directory and see what's all there for archival. What might be the best well-known place to archive a copy of these files? I assume WinWorldPC would not want anything that is not an application or setup media.
