If you just thought "But Linux already supports the #RaspberryPi5, see #RaspberryPiOS", then you just learned why differentiating between the #kernel called Linux (meant here) and operating systems called Linux (often build from forks of the former carrying modifications and enhancements) is important. #LinuxKernel
So, after a bit of updating (due to active cooler control issues), I have found that #ubuntu is far superior to #raspberrypios on a #Pi5. The default raspberry pi os is just...lacking.
I'm getting so annoyed at #RaspberryPiOs. It lags terribly behind #Debian, and even worse, they put so little effort into release engineering that a REINSTALL is required for every major new version. For little embedded things that sit around in various corners of the house, shed, or hangar, that's painful.
Since I have to do a reinstall anyhow, I think I'll switch them all to proper #Debian at this point.
When the Raspberry Pi 5 was announced, we all said that most people would probably be better off repurposing an x86 thin client so we bought some dirt cheap new in box Dell Wyse 5070 machines to see if we were right. Spoiler: we were.
@LateNightLinux OFC you were - just like @heiseonline@ct_Magazin were when they bought some #Fujitsu#Futro Thin client with a Celeron J4105 in it, to the point that these are nowadays completely jacked up in pricing on #eBay.de ...
VokoscreenNG is a screencasting tool with Wayland support that's easy to install on my Raspberry Pi 400 under 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm. Wayland support is experimental and not all features are available but it works and does the job.
The required packages are in Debian, just execute:
As a #dietpi user on various #raspberrypi devices, I am a glutton for punishment. When installing a certain commonly available HAT, the instructions seem to all be from #raspberrypios . I dig my heels in and scream "I don't wanna!" and try to configure things anyway. My stuff still doesn't work. Rinse and Repeat.
Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) is a free operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and optimized for the Raspberry Pi hardware. The project's latest release is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm" and makes a move to switch the graphical interface from X11 to a Wayland session.
I've mentioned this but I'm gonna make a real post.
If you are setting up Windows 11, select "English (World)" as your language (English Europe also works), and you will have NONE of the third party bloatware installed.
No Candy Crush, no Netflix, just the first party apps
Please do share this info with anyone who may be setting up Windows soon
Not gonna argue the lack of @tails or official @torproject#TorBrowser but to make #FullDiskEncryption viable and useable, it just can't be restricted to external media or having to manually fiddle around, cuz that's a pain in the rear.
