The Vale’s Local Radio Station, Bro Radio has announced the shortlist for its 2024 Community Awards, and we made the list 🥳.
We are so thrilled and grateful to everyone who nominated us - all our volunteers do this out of a desire to help and passion for sharing skills and using what they know, so to have them celebrated is truly wonderful.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at Penarth Pier Pavilion on Friday 7th June, with those not in attendance being able to hear highlights from the ceremony on Sunday 9th June from 6pm.
Thank you again to everyone who nominated us, attends the cafes, to all our incredible volunteers, to Barry Library for hosting us every month, to Repair Cafe Wales for supporting us, and to Bro Radio and the team for recognising our contribution to the community.
Bro Radio's #Community Awards recognises the best in community, business, sport and more from across the Vale as part of the station’s fifteenth year on air, the shortlist has been whittled down by a team of judges, from entries made by local people from every corner of the County.
Repair Cafe Barry has been recognised in the Community Group categeory, sponsored by Ogi .
This popped up on my Youtube yesterday, and I found it interesting, not because I didn't know the stuff, but because it implies that there are people who don't realise you can sew with such a basic kit. I see it at #RepairCafe, when people assume I'll be using a sewing machine, and are amazed that I do all my repairs by hand.
Like, we've been sewing for thousands of years, and had machines for just under a couple of hundred.
We are proud to yesterday have been in the UK Parliament demonstrating repair and talking about #RightToRepair with MPs, allies, community repair groups from all over the country
Fantastic to host Patrick Grady MP at the Parliamentary #RepairCafe with BackMarket.
Consumers should be empowered to make the choice to #repair their tech devices or opt to buy refurbished – and to achieve that, policymakers need to take action.
We've counted up all your donations from May and it totalled a huge £129.50!
This month we're putting your donations towards some bike repair items (to make life easier for poor Ben!), a Dremel tool, consumables, and of course to pay for next month's parking (fingers crossed the councillor we're talking to changes that soon 🤞🏽).
#VisibleMending is not only for #clothes. This #colourful#handbag with abstract roses helped me against dark winter days. Suddenly I discovered this terrible hole and decided to mend it. It was not easy to find the fabric (more in the Alt texts) but I saved my handbag! 😊 And now it's a unique piece of individual design! @visiblemending@sewing
Went to the first ever #RepairCafe here in my town just to check it out and meet some of the folks running it (tbh, I'd only heard of its existence yesterday).
Not 10 minutes later, I was accidentally volunteered to help fix small appliances! I managed to help out with one of several broken humidifiers (bad bearings on an easily-replaced motor), but had no tools to do much else. I'll be at the next one, this time legit: with meters, soldering supplies, and maybe some parts!
I’m going to my first #repaircafe today, it’s in a nearby village and I emailed to ask if I could visit and they said yes! I’d like to do something similar in our village as there seems to be the need and the resource just needs the organisation…
Just as an update, had a lovely visit to a nearby village, their #RepairCafe is part of a Good Neighbours scheme (they organise a bus to a local town, help clear gardens, provide a befriending service - they have invited me to their AGM to learn more).
The session had clothes repairs, small wood work repairs, bike repairs, an IT helper and knife sharpener, it’s their 4th session and sounds like advertising was key. There was a little bustle and a queue for the wood repairs person but then /1
I went to a new #RepairCafe today, operated by Sustainable Charlotte. It's a great scene with lots of fixers, a big space, all sorts of home-cooked food, kids running around. Very busy, with a huge list of people waiting for knife sharpening. Too bad I don't do knife sharpening. 😀 I fixed two bicycles, one that needed brake work and a tire re-seated, and another that needed the shifters cleaned. Then no more bikes so I fixed two lamps. #Vermont
