BORN IN …
Today is Rare Disease Day. I have a disease that is not particularly rare, but is considered so because it's underdiagnosed, misunderstood and some of the types are extremely rare.
If there were more funding for research and more training for doctors, perhaps we wouldn't be considered rare any more. 🦓
Last week at this time it was below -30C with windchills, and had been for about a week straight. Now I see a +8C in the forecast! What a slingshot.
What's really wild though is that that kind of wild temperature swing is normal here! (Likely exaggerated by climate change, but well within historical temperature swings.) This is one reason it's hard for random farmers here to believe in climate change - the climate here is already wacky.
(I am not making excuses, just trying to understand the perspectives)
The #ShowYourStripes thing almost doesn't work here. You can definitely see the warming trend, but it's almost drowned out by wild temperature swings in the 1870s/80s.
Always amazes me that people have lived here for thousands of years, and gives me a tiny bit of hope that there's a lot of resilience built in to the ecosystem here.
2023 was the warmest year on record globally by a large margin. Another dark red stripe gets added, though I think I need a new colour. #ShowYourStripes
This is from the BBC show ‘Pointless’ where contestants try to answer the questions which few other people knew the answer to, ideally the pointless ones!
Unlike Greta, who many people knew, I am officially pointless! 🤣
Today is #showyourstripes day. What stripes, you ask? The warming stripes of course! The creation of @ed_hawkins, the stripes show how temperature has changed wherever you live around the world. Here are the stripes for the Netherlands. Find yours and share them too: https://showyourstripes.info credit to @kathhayhoe
Data showing how temperatures are changing in #rhodeisland since 1895. Which explains why not having a/c back in gilded age Newport wasn’t as awful as it would be now. #showyourstripes
It is #ShowYourStripes day! Below are global anomalies since 1850 (blue = cooler, red = warmer), where each stripe represents a single year. You can find stripes for your own region at the website below by @ed_hawkins.
